Giving Charity Is The Lot Of The More Fortunate

By ANN BLUMENTHAL CA 1-1377 Between the raindrops our community has spread a great deal of sunshine with the planning of parties and community projects for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Muscular dystrophy is again on the march to help those afflicted with the incurable disease. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21, 22 and 23 respectively, are the dates, so open your doors as you always have and contribute what you can afford. Southwest Ort is having a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Everglades Elementary School cafetorium. Guest for the evening will be Mrs. Francis Beecher of the Pygmalion Charm School of Coral Gables. The public is invited to attend. Chairman of the program is Joan Waks. "Learn to defend yourself" is the latest cry, heard at the Southwest YMHA, 7215 Coral Way. The cry is the result of opening for registration for judo classes for grade school, junior high, and senior high boys and girls. Under the direction of a fully qualified instructor, the classes will begin as soon as possible. While the judo classes are the latest program to be instituted, the old programs have not been neglected. Registration is open for the after-school program of clubs, arts and crafts, dramatics and dance. For information call CA 1-6441. Sigma Rho will hold their annual sweetheart dance at the Beau Rivage Hotel on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. Sweethearts competing are: Arlene Cohan, 2471 SW 19th Ter., Anne Greenhouse, 2601 SW 24 St., and Harlene Marks, 287 Beacom Blvd. The winner will be crowned by president, Ronnie Rohan, 2431 SW 16 Ct. Adviser, Ronald Shayne, 8240 SW 27 St., will present the Kassin Award to the outstanding member of the year. Greater Miami Boxer Club, Inc. is having a boxer contest on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the U.S. Army Armory, University of Miami campus, 5600 San Amaro Dr. There will be trophies and ribbons for all classes. Dogs must be purebred but need not be AKC registered. Doors open at 1 p.m. Entries close at 2 p.m. The entry fee is $2. Judging starts at 2:30 p.m. The judge will be Mrs. Helen Ferber from Ft. Roosevelt Temple Pythian Sisters No. 33 are having a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Pythian Hall, 4600 West Flagler St. An official visit of District Deputy Shirley Bach, 5880 SW 5 Ter., will be held. A drive for the hurricane victims is still needed. All sisters will bring canned goods and clothing at this meeting and it will be distributed by Mrs. Dottie Sanders to hurricane victims. There will be a kiddie party at Studio M on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1:45 p.m., 208 Bird Rd. Rumpelstiltskin will be presented. For reservations call CA 1-6823. Kenneth Martin Tuck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Tuck, 1871 SW 36 Ave., is being Bar Mitzvahed on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. at Temple Judea, 320 Palermo. Officiating the ceremony will be Rabbi Skop. Kiddish and reception will be held at the Temple following the services. Mrs. Gertrude Rachline, 3631 NW 15 St., is off to England for a visit with her family. Marcia Robinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Robinson, 255 SW 51 Ave., is now attending the University of London in England. Mr. and Mrs. Irving Ostrow, 3050 SW 83 Ct., are celebrating their son Michael's second birthday. We are all very happy to hear that Shirley Abrams, 150 SW 52 Ct., is home convalescing. Visits from her friends will be appreciated. Mr. and Mrs. Murry G. Goldberg, 3245 SW 23 Ave., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Cyndy, to Sheldon Dunkel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Dunkel, 4931 SW 87 Pl. A dinner is being held in their honor on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Dunkel. The date for the wedding has not been set. The community donated blood to this little fellow last year so that he could live another year. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jay Goldberg of Miami; grandmother, Mrs. Sylvia Goldberg, 6438 SW 23 St.; and aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Herb and Flo Aumont, 6610 SW 4 St.
