Gables High Notes Math Merit Certificate Awarded To Gables High
By LESLIE GROSS The National Mathematics Association presented a certificate of merit to Gables High, one of the 12 schools in Florida to be so distinguished. The Gables High team of William Zame, Gerald Bottorf and Tom Finke-lor also placed first in Florida on the team count. William Zame was first in the state in individual score. Seven Excused Edward Kaim, 1960 Gables graduate and editor of the school newspaper, the High-lights, along with six other freshmen, has been exempted from taking Freshman English. Eddie, whose advanced placement results earned him the privilege of taking the second-year course, "Introduction to Literary Criticism," will take another second-year course entitled "Modern American Novelists" next semester. Attends Colloquim Harry N. Rath, Gables High principal, attended a colloquim or somewhat formal conference at Amherst this past weekend. Gables High is the only school in Florida to be so represented. Rath spent two days at Amherst, where Jay Finkelstein, valedictorian of the Class of '59 is now enrolled. He then was given a tour of Smith College, where Gables students Sue Hiller and Janet Smith are currently enrolled. Kaffeeklatsch-Kino The German Club, under sponsor Mrs. Kathie Wilson, presented a program and refreshments for new members, old members, and parents last week. A film, "Rendezvous With Europe," was shown, and refreshments were served afterward. New Officers Chemistry Club, sponsored by Walter Bowlby, elected the following first semester officers: Jeffrey Platt, president; Warren Kirsch, vice president; Jssica Snyder, corresponding secretary; Joan Temchin, recording secretary; Steve Magida, parliamentarian; Leslie Gross, chaplain; and Lee Sandler, sergeant-at-arms. L'Allegro, music honorary for talented musicians, has elected its officers: Dennie Koger, president; Richard Ginn, vice president; Diane Dickinson, secretary; and Debbie Olsen, treasurer. The club is now working on a "Blue Moon" dance to be staged some time in the near future. Modern Music Masters, chorus honorary, will be led this semester by: Pat Gabriel, president; Bill Brown, secretary; and Linda Harvey, treasurer. National Athletic Scholarship Society has elected its new officers for the year. They are: Bruce Fischer, president; Louis Stinson, vice president; and Joel Eaton, secretary. The new Letterman's officers are: Dave Wike, president; Richard Parsons, vice president; and Chuck Helm, secretary-treasurer. Wheel Club's new officers are: Steve Mogg, president; Randy Martin, vice president; Eric Jones, scond vice president; Lon Dowlen, recording secretary; Jeff Tew, corresponding secretary; and treasurer, Bob Gifford. Crescent Club's new officers are: President, Curry Basset; vice president, Bob Stearns; recording secretary, David Tripp; corresponding secretary, Bill Tegtman; treasurer, Jack Fretwell; historian, Dave Davis; and sergeant-at-arms, John Phelps. The sponsor is Philip Johansen. Full Swing Now that the new Constitution has been ratified by the senior and junior homerooms, the Student Government is ready to get down to business for the coming year. Assisting the Student Government officers are the members of the cabinet: David Callahan, Secretary of State; Bob Gifford, Secretary of Interior; Joel Eaton, Secretary of Defense; Suzy Reno, Secretary of Finance; Fran Malice, Secretary of Publicity; Bess Smith, Chaplain; Bob Sterns, Parliamentarian; Louis Stinson, Secretary of Sports; Nancy Jones, Secretary of Public Works; Bill Patton, Assembly Chairman; Peny Poppe, Corresponding Secretary; Lon Dowlen, Student Actions; Hugh Wilson, Sergeant-at-arms; and Curry Basset, Activity Points Chairman.
Revival Scheduled
The University Baptist Church will begin a Revival Sunday, Oct. 16. Dr. Baker James Cauthen, prominent evangelist, will present the Gospel of Christ.
