'Whitewash' Is Charged
(Continued From Page One) regrettable that the city has had to gouge money from golfers, tennis players, school children riding the buses, elderly shuffleboard players, etc., and to deprive the policemen and firemen of long deserved pay increases, due to alleged budgetary limitations, and then permit Doctors' Hospital to freeload on the taxpayers of Coral Gables," Weksler said. Tax Assessor To back his charge, Weksler said that Tax Assessor Tommy Blount has repeatedly ruled that the hospital does not meet the requirements for exemption and that state law setting up exemptions has not been followed. Th present Commission and those preceding it have followed Semple's opinion that the hospital is entitled to tax exemption. An audit report completed recently by Paul Gleman, the city's chief auditor, appeared generally favorable to the hospital, but Weksler said that it bears him out and that a complete audit would prove that the hospital is not entitled to exemption. Doctors', established as a profit-making institution, was re-established as a non-profit institutio under the Dr. John T. MacDonald Foundation. The original investors are being paid back from hospital income. Weksler maintains that the investors are realizing 314.75 percent on their investment and this constitutes profit which should be taxed. Gleman and hospital authorities, backed by the city attorney, disagree and say the rate is only 6 percent compounded.
New Mayflower Offers 24 Hour Daily Service
The new Mayflower Restaurant, located on the Trail at SW 8th St. ad 39th Ave., combines dining room, coffee shop plus curb and patio service 24 hours daily. It is part of a national chain that extends from New York to California and from Northern Minnesota to Southern Florida. Mr. John Davis, formerly manager of the Mayflower Biscayne unit for the past 20 years, will assume the duties and responsibility of serving the highest quality of fresh, flavorful foods in the charming atmosphere and appointments in this new establishment. He states that he will see to it that only good, wholesome food will be served in the cheerful friendliness of good service. This policy has been the chief reason for the growth of Mayflower restaurants not only in Miami but also throughout the nation. New Restaurant In talking with Charles Angen, vice president and general manager of all Mayflower restaurants, he stated that this new Trail restaurant has been opened to cater to family and social eating covering 24 hours of the day. Breakfast, luncheon, dinners and the late, late tasty snacks will be served. The pleasant dining atmosphere has been created to release diners from the pressures, tensions, frustrations and anxities of the day. Cleanliness, good food, good service and atmosphere are reflected throughout the operation. A freshly ground "cooked to order" hamburger on a toasted bun with tasty relishes is prepared and served with as much care as a full course diner served in a candlelight atmosphere. Hot foods are served hot and cold foods cold. Sandwiches have real portion fillings. There is no compromise with quality. Children Welcome The atmosphere and surroundings are such that children can be managed with a minimum of care. Prices coicide with family budgets. Appropriate background music and lighting, both in the interior as well as the patio, and curb service is conductive to pleasant relaxation. It will be a favorite "after Sunday church" spot to enjoy the most tender and light pancakes and waffles served plain with warm syrup or lucious fruit sauces. The Mayflower donuts, made from a special Mayflower mix including only fresh grade A eggs and milk are world famous. It is an iron clad rule they always be fresh. Any "day old" donuts are given away free, providing they are picked up at any one of the four Mayflower restaurants. Jerry La Rose, supervisor of Florida operation, is another Mayflower executive of over 20 years association and has lived in Miami for the past decade.
Eddie Johns' 44 yard touchdown gallop against South Carolina was the longest TD run from scrimmage for the University of Miami since 1957 when Joe Plevel went for 80, Tom Stewart for 52 and Fran Curci for 44.
