Southwest Guideposts Record Vote Predicted When Dade Votes
By RON LEVITT An Observation In Our Town: Tuesday is election day - the day on which we elect the next president of the United States. A person who fails to go to the polls and cast his ballot has no right to criticize anything which happens in our government functions during the next four years. Pre-Election Thoughts: During the next five days you - the public - will be inundated with political talk. Your television set will blare forth with [?] I commercials by the respective parties. You may receive campaign literature in the mail. Republican and Democratic groups will stage their last-minute coffees for Kennedy and coffees for Nixon. Car pools will be arranged to get voters to the polls. All of this will be a last minute attempt to persuade the so-called "uncommitted voter" ... the voters whom the experts say will decide the election. You may hear a few die-hards try to stir up false issues in the campaign - such as the religious issue. For those of you who haven't yet made up your mind how you will cast that important vote Tuesday - try to forget these false issues and these last minute attempts to sway your vote. The vote should be cast on the important issues of the campaign - the issues brought forth in the Great TV Debates - foreign policy, economic growth and the personal ability of the candidates. Things To Watch For: 1. Whichever candidate wins the governorship, he will run behind the national ticket in Tuesday's election. 2. Dade County will set a voting record this Tuesday; the total Florida vote should also set a new record. 3. The Metro Commission will eventually purchase all of the remaining bus lines in Dade County from Financier Bill Pawley. 4. More and more defections by Cubans to the Greater Miami area from Fidel-land and a concentrated effort here by exiled Cubans to blast the Red-tinged cuban regime with words and other kinds of ammunition. 5. The Mid-Bay Causeway proposal will pop up again but will be defeated. 6. An increased tempo of work on the Palmetto Expressway - at least as far south as Bird Road. Work is targeted to be completed to that point before Tropical Park opens its season. Otherwise, the traffic tieup will be mighty bad on The Trail, Coral Way and Bird Road. 7. Watch for a giant battle among the major airlines serving Miami. All are waging a big advertising campaign highlighting its "economy fares" to Florida. The beneficiary of this ad battle will be South Florida who may get a record tourist influx out of the "economy fare" battle. 8. Coconut Grove Playhouse expects to have its biggest "name" season ever, opening with Academy Award winner Shirley ("Come Back, Little Sheba") Booth in "The Late Christopher Bean." Next will be Kim Hunter in "The Disenchanted." 9. Two different shopping center developers trying to get a major department store interested in locating at Coral Way and Galloway Road. However, it looks as if one of the developers will get a "discount" type department store while the other continues his efforts to get a "top name" department store. 10. Residents along the west end of Bird Road may finally get something they've been waiting for for quite some time - a major shopping center. An announcement of "construction getting underway" is expected within the next few weeks. Only holdup is a court decision involving a zoning hassle. Intercepted Mail: Here are a few letters from readers in recent weeks: Dear Mr. L: Regarding your column Oct. 13 on election polls, don't you think it can easily be determined who the winner will be by counting bumper strips on various cars?-CK. Answer: Dear CK: I tried your suggestion and counted bumper strips on a busy corner for an hour. If your theory is correct, our next president will be Cypress Gardens.-RL * * * Dear Mr. L.: We noticed your article last week on the Negro housing development in South Dade! Do you consider this interesting for a white paper? -R.K.W. Answer: I am not quite sure I understand what you mean by a "white paper." The newspapers of America are noted for their lack of prejudice - and that is how it should be. To me, the news of a new and growing Negro community was extremely interesting. Perhaps you got the impression about a "white paper" because this newspaper is printed on white newsprint. You will notice our ink is black. Now, tell me, what could be more American than that!!
The University of Miami has completed its 1960 play against Atlantic Conference football opposition with a clean sweep by defeating both North and South Carolina. Maryland was the last ACC team to down Miami, that in 1958.
