Baby Sitter Service Hurdles The Foreign Language Barrier
Louisa Aymerich has hurdled the language barrier in a unique baby sitting service she founded, and it has put in her hand "the key to happiness." Mrs. Aymerich has organized a crew of 30 women, all with Red Cross certificates, who speak Spanish, German, French, Hungarian, Polish and Italian, as well as English. And if ever parents, who speak a foreign tongue, prefer an unusually reliable baby sitter who speaks their language, Mrs. Aymerich is as close as the telephone. Or if there's an elderly person, perhaps an invalid, at home, and you'd like an attendant to look after him for a specified time, again Mrs. Aymerich could help you. The service Mrs. Aymerich and the International Baby Sitter group provide is more to her than a "baby sitting" chore. More At Ease It's helping people who need help. And more so, assisting those who speak a foreign language and would be more at ease with one who speaks their tongue. How did this idea begin? "I have five friends who have all baby-sat," explained Mrs. Aymerich, 5855 SW 46th Ter., "and they told me, 'you know, there is a terrific need among parents for baby sitters who are reliable . . .' "Well, I sat down and I thought. I wondered if baby sitters could be organized. I figured 'Well, I am going to do this!'" And she did. Though she has about 30 women available, Mrs. Aymerich plans to expand to a force of 100. And she hopes to branch out into more languages. "I love this," said Mrs. Aymerich. "It gives me so much happiness to help other people. "I have found out the key to happiness is nothing else but helping others." Expectant Mothers Mrs. Aymerich's help to parents is very thorough. For example, an expectant mother might want someone to care for her children when she's away at the hospital giving birth to another child. Mrs. Aymerich will send a sitter to the house several weeks before the mother is due to leave. The attendant will assume some of the household duties and, most important, secure the children's confidence. When the mother is at the hospital, the sitter will assume home duties. And when the mother returns, the attendant will remain until the mother feels capable of assuming responsibility for the home. TAKING A BABY SITTING ASSIGNMENT over the telephone is Mrs. Louisa Aymerich of the International Baby Sitter Service. Behind her, waiting for their next call of duty, are, left to right, Helen Czarnecki, who speaks Polish, and Delores Fastigallo, well-versed in Italian.
Gables Pilot Club Celebrates Founders Day
City commissioner and vice Mayor Frank E. Kerdyk of Coral Gables and Mrs. Kerdyk were honor guests at the Founder's Day dinner of the Pilot Club of Coral Gables held Wednesday at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Mr. Kerdyk gave the Pilots and their guests a talk about the activities around Coral Gables and what Pilot Club members can do for the community in the way of service and good fellowship. Observing their 39th year of organization and service within their communities, the members displayed their newly purchased Coral Gables Pilot Club banner, together with their charter, granted in 1951. Mr. Kerdyk presented a bouquet of flowers to each charter member present: Augusta Johnson, Thelma Barkman, Lucia Hartog and Dorothy Melvin. The floral centerpiece was sent to past president Mrs. Louise Cornwell, who is a patient at Doctors' Hospital recovering from surgery. Monday (the 24th) was Mrs. Cornwell's birthday. She is a charter member of Pilot.
