Production Of 'Carousel' Is Big Hit With Students, Parents
By LESLIE GROSS The Coral Gables High School music department presented its version of Carousel last Friday night. For 75c, the audience was treated to fine performances by Marilyn Kaufman, Bill Brown, Pat Gabriel, Tanya Cox, Bill Gibbs and the rest of the department. Last Monday, the Gables High Inter-Club Council held its first meeting. The presidents of all the school clubs met with Mr. Byrd, director of student activities, to discuss questions of interest to all the organizations. The Gables varsity track team recently held its preliminary meeting for boys interested in competing in the varsity sport. Students signed up for events in which they wish to compete. Practice will get into full swing after the Christmas vacation with Gables hoping for another fine track season. Football Banquet Held The Senior and Junior Exchange Clubs last Thursday were hosts for the annual football banquet. Players, their families, and invited guests were treated to a fine collation at the school cafeteria. Tribute was paid to the Gables High football squad for its fine 1960 showing. The Gables Student Council has undertaken two worthy projects this Christmas season. The Student Council has inaugurated a post office for delivery of Christmas cards at no cost. This year's service has been even better than last year's postal endeavor. Students deposited their cards at the auditorium commissary and Student Council carriers rushed them to eager recipients sitting anxiously in their homerooms. The Student Council also, is sponsoring a community service project called Christmas Cubano. Students have been bringing in canned and other dried foods to brighten up the holiday season of some of our refugees in Miami. New Club Started Gables High is witnessing the formation of a new club, the name of which is Future Doctors of America. Sponsor, Mr. James Gleason, has been signing up interested students after school. The club proposes to meet with eminent doctors and learn more about the medical profession. Mr. Gleason and company hope to visit a local hospital as a project toward the end of the school year. The National Forensic League Calendar came out last week to the delight of Gables students. Credit should go to the following members of the staff: Co-editors-in-chief, Richard Schuster, Michael H. Sadler; assistant editors, B. B. Warren, William Brown; business manager, Steve Magida; co-fashion editors, Rosalyn Friedman and Charlotte Everett; advertising coordinator, Alan Dinsmore. Students participating in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search took the 21⁄2 hour qualifying exam last Monday. Results will be announced in February. A semi-formal dance run by and for Gables area high school students was held last Saturday at the Coral Gables Youth Center. Last Friday, Gables students were treated to an interesting and informative science assembly presented by the Air Force Missile Testing Center. A representative from the Cape Canaveral Center showed slides of success and failures in the field of guided missiles and gave an excellent explanation of U. S. missile projects. Clubs Plan Christmas Parties The German Club's annual Christmas part, will be held tonight at the home of Mrs. Kathe Wilson, sponsor and German teacher at Gables High. Alumni are invited, and a pleasant evening of singing, games, reunions and refreshments is planned. The Coral Gables Literary Society is holding its first annual Christmas party on the evening of Dec. 26, at the home of Leonard C. Tashman. Miss Karlene Pettengill, Gables English teacher and Literary Club sponsor, and Mr. Gilbert Johnson, also a Gables English instructor, are soon to be wed. Coach Robert McAfee of the basketball squad recently gave his varsity squad a luncheon in honor of his forthcoming marriage. Gables cheerleaders and varsity basketball players are planning a party for him and his fiancee some time in the near future.
