Workers To Raze Old Antilla Hotel Landmark Is Destined For Destruction

The historic old Antilla Hotel is destined for dust. A spokesman for Arthur Vining Davis, the owner, confirmed report Wednesday that the fabulous old building at 1111 Ponce de Leon Blvd., will be torn down. Crews from Calif Construction Co. are already on site removing landscaping and salvaging materials. Scott-Whitaker Co. is scheduled to demolish the building, the spokesman said. The boom time hotel figured prominently in the news in recent weeks when the city of Coral Gables considered, but turned down, offers to purchase the property which had been linked to a new public library which Davis would have donated. The hotel, vacant for more than a year, has been burglarized and vandalized numerous times in recent months and most of the unattached property removed. A survey was made to determine cost of restoration, Davis' spokesman said, but the plan proved prohibitive. The Antilla was one of several hotels constructed in 1925 and figured prominently in countless social events since.

Sylvania Heights Pupils Help Friends With English

By RAYMOND LANG When there's a will, there's a way. And it's being proven at Sylvania Heights Elementary School. About a dozen Latin American children, most of whose parents have come here from Cuba in recent months, have a powerful will to master English in this new land. The school has found the way. Two ways, that is. One. Each Latin American child spends an hour each day in an English class especially conducted for him. Second. The newcomers are not isolated from the regular classes, but "absorbed" into them. "Their progress is just amazing," said acting principal Vivien Cleveland, "and they're just so eager to learn. "They've been absorbed into the regular classrooms and they're learning English so fast," she enthusiastically repeated. "They're now even able to speak simple sentences in English. And their parents are so appreciative of our efforts to absorb them into the regular class rooms." But Sylvania Heights, at 5901 SW 16th St., is asking the Latin American youngsters to make an effort above and beyond gleaning English from textbooks. "We're asking them to speak English as much as possible outside of school," continued Mrs. Cleveland, "and to find a friend to converse with." Just Delighted! How do the English-speaking children feel toward their new neighbors? Just delighted! "You know how these children are," said Mrs. Cleveland, referring to the Spanish youngsters, "so vivacious and full of energy." Packed into her words was the feeling that you could not help but be delighted with the Latin American small fry. "There's a set of twins," the principal went on, "they are just beautiful . . . Oh, they're just beautiful. "They have such a warm sense of humor . . . and the children just love them." Out at Sylvania Heights, "Bienvenido" is more than just "welcome." It means "You're now one of us."

Gables Woman Fights Off Attack Attempt

A Coral Gables woman reported being attacked by an unidentified white man as she walked home one night recently. The victim, Mrs. Elizabeth Green, 2208 Segovia Cir., told Coral Gables police she successfully fought off the attacker and ran for help. The assailant had vanished when police arrived. Described only as being tall, the mugger grabbed Mrs. Green in the 500 block of Aragon shortly before 9 p.m. He placed his hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming as he came up unseen and unheard from behind, she said. Mrs. Green said she bit and kicked her attacker, causing him to release her. She then broke away and ran home. The attack took place in an area near a wall and bushes and the assailant may have been lurking in the dark, police said. When Officer Harold Herrington returned to the scene with the victim, they found some of her personal possessions scattered all over.

He's Lawyer Not Gasser

Coral Gables City Attorney Ted Semple's remark that "I'm a lawyer and I know nothing about gas" nearly brought down the house at the Dec. 13 City Commission meeting. Semple, noted for his flowery and often colorful oratory, made the statement during the appeal of the Orange State Oil Company for permission to construct a gas station on LeJeune Rd.
