Five Hurt In Accident Involving Gables Bus

Five persons were injured, one seriously, in an accident in Miami December 10 involving a Coral Gables bus and three cars at the intersection of Coral Way and SW 16th Court. Michael E. Reiburn, 67, of 1165 97th St., Miami Beach, the more seriously injured, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. His 1959 Chevrolet was demolished. Slightly Injured Rose Azrikon, 60, a passenger in her husband's car, was also slightly injured, as were three bus passengers. They were identified as C. W. Kling, 6749 SW 39th St.; Mrs. Robert Tyler, 8485 SW 68th Pl., and Mrs. F. A. Brown, 906 Genoa, Coral Gables. According to Officer Carl Fielder, who investigated the accident for Coral Gables following Miami Officer K. England's investigation, the Gables bus was westbound on Coral Way shortly after 9 p.m. when a car driven by Samuel Azrikon, 61, pulled out of the Post Office parking lot tin front of the bus. The bus swerved sharply to the left as the driver, Frank W. Lovejoy, 30, of 2300 Salzedo, attempted to brake the vehicle to a stop. Struck Car In doing so, the bus nosed over into the eastbound lane and struck the eastbound Reiburn car. Reiburn was thrown from the driver's side onto the seat, lost control of his car, struck another eastbound car driven by John B. Cummings, 22, of 1429 Messina, and wound up on the opposite side of the divided parkway in a clump of rose bushes. The left and right sides of the municipally owned vehicle were damaged. The other cars, other than Reiburn's, sustained relatively minor damage. The case is under investigation.

Blue And White Corner 800 Hear Jazz Concert Set A First At Palmetto

By EUNICE TALL One of the most outstanding Palmetto High School events was witnessed on Dec. 9 by approximately 800 people. The first Palmetto High Senior Class of 1961 presented the Gene Roy Band in concert. The band is a group of 15 individually well-known musicians living in Miami who have played with such famous bands as Kenton, Dorsey, Goodman and Miller. They formed to help keep alive the sound of American jazz. The concert, the first of its kind in several years, was sponsored for two reasons: the first, to enable the public to hear big band music, and the second, to raise money for a senior class patio on the school grounds. The Gene Roy Band gave a history of jazz and expressed sound of Big Bands during the three hour concert from 8 to 11 p.m. The main organizers of the event were seniors John Reitz and Emerson Moran. Several hundred dollars were realized as profit. White Represents Palmetto As a member of the Florida delegation to the Fifteenth Annual Allied Youth Convention recently, Bill White represented Palmetto. The convention this year was held in Buck Hill Falls, Penna. While traveling with the Florida group, Bill visited Washington, D. C. On tour they saw the White House, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, and the Capitol Building. The group also visited Mt. Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery and New York City. Several well-known guest speakers addressing the delegates at the convention were Lynda Lee Meade, Miss America 1960; Dr. R. C. Poling, director of the Board of Trustees of Allied Youth; and J. C. Penny, of Penny Stores. Of the many topics discussed several outstanding ones were "Alcohol in the Home," "Alcohol in Driving" and "No Place for Alcohol in Business." As a winner in the convention talent show, Bill was awarded a trip to the South Convention of Allied Youth to be held in April. Duman Winner Jay Duman, eighth grade student, won the Expert Rifleman Medal, the second highest award in American junior shooting, the National Rifle Association receive it. This award is given rarely as one must obtain a certain score before being eligible to receive it. Ray is active as a member in the South Miami Junior Rifle Club and is one of the junior managers of the Palmetto football team. Cahokia Mound Cahokia Mound in the suburbs of East St. Louis, Ill., was built by prehistoric ancestors of American Indians. It occupies more space than any of the pyramids at Giza, one of the Seven wonders of the ancient world, the National Geographic Magazine says. In 1950, Suwanee County corn yield averaged 12 bushels per acre; average from 60,000 acres this year approached 30 bushels.
