THE HANDS OF GHOSTS REACH OUT for Ebeneezer Scrooge to take him on a journey to see what he has left in his wake because the Christmas spirit was not in his heart. Ned Tannebaum plays Scrooge, left. The ghosts are, left to right, Maureen Brown, Diane Calthrope and Terry Fine. These students at Riviera Junior High School presented Charles Dickens' work Thursday night in the school auditorium.
THE NATIVITY SCENE, symbolic of Christmas, highlighted the Yuletide program last week at Riviera Junior High School. In the scene are, left to right, first row, Shelia O'Neil, Mike Morgan, Tom Eaton, Mike Prescott and Bobby Delgado. The angels in the second row are, left to right, Christine Socha, Bunnie Brooks and Barbara Dorris.
Junior High To Contrast Two Christmas Aspects
"Christmas? Hum bug!," shrieks a wizened old man as he tugs tighter his robe and slips into bed, not knowing what lies ahead in the night. In sharp contrast, 66 voices sing aloud the sweet strains of "Ave Maria." And there is the 80-piece concert band to strike up "O Come, All Ye Faithful." But this is just a sampling. Yuletide Show There was more Christmas music and singing when students at Riviera Junior High School presented their Yuletide show for their parents and guests at 8 p.m., Dec. 15, in the auditorium. The drama, choral and music departments teamed up to put together this Christmas program, free of charge. Drama students, under the direction of Martha Jarvis, presented a 15-minute version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." Dickens' work deals with a miserly old man, Ebeneezer Scrooge, who doesn't believe in Christmas, only to regret it later. Ned Tannebaum portrayed Scrooge with Terry Fine, Maureen Brown and Diane Calthrope acting as the three ghosts that come to haunt him on Christmas Eve. Narrarated Play Due to the limited time of the skit, a student, Donna Evans, narrated during much of the play. The drama department also presented a feature symbolic of the spirit of Christmas - the Nativity Scene. With special lighting to create a soft, night-like effect, eight students, representing angels, wise men and Joseph and Mary, gathered around a cradle as John Brennan delivers a Scripture reading. Shelia O'Neil is Mary and Mike Morgan portrayed Joseph. The three agnels are Christine Socha, Bunnie Brooks and Barbara Dorris. The wise men are Bobby Delgado, Tom Easton and Mike Prescott. The chorus, for their portion of the program, sang "Ave Maria," "Gloria In Excelis" and other favorites. Janice Feld will accompany on the organ. The concert band, under the direction of Ray Turner, will present the "Christmas March," "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "Three Songs for Christmas," and "The March of the Toy Soldiers."

Remember The Times
25 Years Ago The official opening of the Coral Gables Cuntry Club was two weeks away . . . A campaign to put only safe drivers on the streets of Coral Gables was underway. Police were bearing down hard on persons found guilty of reckless driving and the who didn't have driver's licenses or inspection tags . . . The big guns of the golf world trained their sights on the $10,000 purse at stake in the Miami Biltmore tournament . . . A little friendly persuasion worked. A word from Mayor Roscoe Brunstetter and the Coral Gables Realty Board that "For Sale" and "For Rent" signs were distasteful and should not be posted in front of homes had a magical effect. Instantly, many of the signs disappeared from the scene. 10 Years Ago Andy Gustafson signed a 10-year-contract to remain as head coach of the football team at the University of Miami. This put to an end rumors that Gustafson might head north to handle the gridiron squad at a university in Minnesota . . . Are our schools in Coral Gables victims of overcrowding? That was the question that sparked debates on whether Coral Gables Elementary School and South Miami Elementary School were short of space . . . West Miami dedicated its new City Hall . . . What did children want most for Christmas? The Santa Claus at a Gables' store said the small fry wanted bicycles the most, although the year before the most popular item was guns.
