A "PONDEROUS" PREDICAMENT

A "PONDEROUS" PREDICAMENT, that's what rotund Santa Claus is in when he, of all things, gets stuck in the chimney. But that's just what befell Old St. Nick (Vic Fischer) at a Christmas Show last week at Ponce de Leon Junior High School. Wondering how they're going to pry loose the Ambassador of Good Will from the North Pole are Ellen Goulding, left, and Suzanne Mitchell.

PRINCESSES IN PINK

twirl on their toes as they rehearse in the final minutes for last week's Christmas show in the Ponce de Leon Junior High School auditorium. Poised to the tune of "The Nutcracker Suite" are Kathy Knight, left, and Charleen Rosser, wearing pink attire.

Ponce Program Combines Christmas, Chanukah

By RAYMOND LANG | A program combining the music of Chanukah and Christmas was presented at 8 p.m., Dec. 15, in the auditorium of Ponce de Leon Junior High School. Parents and guests are invited to attend this program, presented for the second year. There was no admission charge. Not only did Hebraic and American music fill the auditorium, but there was also works with the flavor of Russian, Spanish and Italian. 275 Voices The 275 voices in the school's chorus, the orchestra and a 20-piece string solo group, presented most of the music embodying the spirit of Chanukah and Christmas. A student, Roslyn Streifer, performed an interpretive dance to the strains of the theme song from the movie, "Exodus." Two other Ponce students, Kathy Knight and Charleen Rosser, teamed up in a ballet to the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky. Bill Sussman was the major soloist during the Chanukah program and Barbara Wukus, in a special presentation, read from the Scriptures, Luke 2:1-14, with the chorus blending in a musical background. Music of People "I would like to say I'm giving the music of people," said choral director Juanita Raifield, in explaining the diversity of the music. "It doesn't matter where it's coming from, it's music. And probably one of the great unifying things in life is music." Mrs. Raifield pointed out that Chanukah and Christmas are "both signified by light" and that the two holidays "fall close together and we enjoy the music of both." These were her main purposes in blending the music of the two. The portion of the program devoted to Chanukah was highlighted by the singing of "Hatikvah," "Hava Nagila," and "Shalem Chaverim." The Christmas part of the program presented the usual favorites, such as "I Saw Mommie Kissing Santa Claus" and "Winter Wonderland."
