Contracts Awarded
Square Deal Machinery Co. was awarded a $29,910 contract for a truck crane by the Coral Gables City Commission last week after some confusion resulted on the bidding. Neff Machinery Co., with a bid of $29,994, had been recommended by City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. after study by department heads and the purchasing agent. Less maintenance was claimed for the machine, although this factor had not been specified. A representative of Allied Machinery Co. claimed that he was the low bidder with $29,900, but the bid had been rejected for allegedly failing to meet the specifications. Lengthy conversation ensued about the capacity of the various machines in question. It became apparent that Square Deal was getting the better of the argument, but the representative pressed his point. "You're ahead right now," Mayor John M. Montgomery advised the Square Deal man as he insisted on emphasizing his point. The Commission later awarded Square Deal the contract on a unanimous decision.
