South Miami Roundup

with Ed Knight WATER, WHETHER IT be fresh, salt, cold or warm, is one of the most invigorating of the earth's gifts. There is nothing more refreshing than taking a hot shower in the winter, a cold shower in the summer or a dip in a cool pool. A CHILD LOVES THE warmness of the bath and the spray of a garden hose on a hot day. An adult loves the respite of several hours at the beach and the gentle easing of a slide into a home pool. The water is everyone's pleasure. WATER MEANS SWIMMING. To some, It means a high diving board, a day at the beach or an evening in the cool breezes near a pool. Water means therapy to the ill and excitement to the well. It means relaxation for the worried and peace for the contented. WATER IS PERHAPS the world's greatest means of recreation. It is a world-wide means, as thrilling to the waif as to the millionaire. Water thrills know no age limits or financial bounds. The water has a drawing force quite apart from all others of the earth's thrills. HERE IN SOUTH Florida, here are beaches, bayous, bays and oceans. There are hotel pools, motel pools, home pools and lakes. There are waterways, rockpits and canals. There are backyard pools and municipal pools. But there are few places on earth where the average man longed so greatly for the benefits of water. IF YOU ARE WEALTHY, you have a pool in or near your home. Your friends come over. Life centers around the pool. And it's great. If you live near a beach, you grab your tennis shoes, your swim suit and a blanket and head for the sand. It's as natural as dining with friends. IF YOU LIVE near a municipal pool, you give the kids a quarter, put them on their bikes and aim them for the pool. If they swim, they head for the deep part. If they are younger, they stay in the shallow water. There's a lifeguard and you have no worries. BUT THERE IN SOUTH and west Dade, there are no municipal pools. The nearest is the Venetian pool in Coral Gables. The beach? It's ten miles that way and across the bridge. Sure, there's Matheson Hammock. But Matheson is so crowded with cars and people on the weekend. I DEFY YOU to try to find a place to park at Matheson Hammock at 2 p.m. on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday. It's impossible. Miami Beach? This should be Miami's play area. Instead it belongs not to us, the residents, but to the tourists. SO HERE WE ARE. It's like starving in the horn of plenty. There's water all around us. But there's not a drop to swim in-unless you travel miles through heavy traffic to a beach or unless you motor miles to the municipal pool. THE NEXT BEST thing is the home pool - a luxury few of us can afford. It's nice. It's invigorating. It's refreshing. But why build a pool for several thousands of dollars when South Florida should be saturated with beaches or municipal pools? IT'S A GOOD question-and only one the Metro Commission can answer. Miami Beach was stolen away from the residents. Hotels occupy our beaches. And the ironic part is that few hotel patrons use the beaches. They prefer, instead, to use the hotel pool. IF PLANS ARE not made now for more swimming facilities, there will be no more public facilities left. The land for beaches near the residents is available now. It should be used for the populace and not for private interests.

The Life of a Fireman

The closest thing to a smoke eater's heaven is to be found on South Dixie Highway in the Gables. We refer to the city's new fire station, which was christened last Saturday. It's undoubtedly accurate to say that it's the poshest fire station in these United States. And don't think the men who man it aren't proud of it. They showed off the building with all the pride of a lady in her new home. There was something there for everybody, although plainly the thing that most impressed the wives with whom we toured was the announcement that firemen not only cook their own breakfast but wash their own dishes. Plenty of politicians were mixed in among the curious and the well wishers. A pair of them we spotted are politicus emeritus just now but have a proprietary interest in the realization of another civic achievement. We refer to former Mayor Keith Phillips and former City Manager Dutch Willard. Like we said, there was something there for everybody, including plenty of opportunity for the kids to ring the bell on the hook and ladder. The only thing that was missing, and we are sure it was an oversight, was a checker board.
