How to Run a Library

Thursday, April 20, 1961 THE GUIDE 9

She Dusted, Scrubbed, Dressed As a Lady

By RAYMOND LANG When Margaret Beaton was a little girl in Cleveland, each week she faithfully went to "Story Hour" at a neighborhood library. She loved books. But what she was to read in books as a little girl can't match stories about the early days of the Coral Gables Library, where she's been head librarian since 1928. Miss Beaton, preparing for National Book Week April 16-22, paused from her work one day recently to reminisce. "In those days, of 1928 we couldn't afford a janitor so one day with a dust cloth on my head I got down to scrub the floor. "I don't know why I had to do it that day except that I felt it had to be cleaned before books and supplies could be put away. "That day, a Mr. Gaylord, who was head of Gaylord Library Supplies, known throughout the world, came in and asked for the head librarian. "I didn't want to tell him I was! "I had too much pride to let him know I was the head librarian. I told him if he came back tomorrow, the head librarian would be in. I was hoping he wouldn't recognize me the next day. I'd be dressed up. "He did come back the next day and he asked for the head librarian. I told him I was. And of course he recognized me, "but we became warm friends." Miss Beaton told another story of the early days. "One day, a woman came to the library. She had just come to the United States from Germany and we hadn't gone to war with them yet. "She couldn't speak English. And I couldn't speak German. "I went to get a German dictionary and asked her if she couldn't come back Sunday. She did. "When she came in Sunday, she saw a piano, motioned to it and sat down to play. "It was one of the most beautiful afternoons I had ever spent. She played like a concert pianist." A third experience today brings a chuckle from Miss Beaton. It concerns the freezing winter of '27-'28. "It was very cold that winter and we were all so full of fire that we thought only of giving to the public and not ourselves. "There was a wood stack outside and we used to go out there, bring in the wood, get the paper and get the fire started in the library's fireplace. "We never wanted the people to see us doing it," Miss Beaton quickly pointed out, "manual labor and all. "And I can still remember us in those heavy coast coats waiting on the people without any heat in that tremendous building." Though working conditions were grueling, the library prospered. Book circulation has risen from 1,200 a month to 17,000. The number of volumes has shot from 2,800 to 38,000. "I guess I've been so busy all my life the years have piled up. When you look back at them, it seems like such a long time."

Dip's Over; Realty Sales Up Again

"We've reached bottom and are gradually coming up," said the executive vice president of the Coral Gables Board of Realtors Wednesday. W. Anderson cited real estate sales here for March as proof that business is beginning to tingle again. Sales are up for the third straight month, though still lower than the same period in 1960. March's total Gables sales was $1,338,450. March, 1960, the figure was $1,767,975. Low point this year was January with $811,450 followed by February with $1,275,070.
