By Paul Brick Boy Scouts who are to be awarded the religious award of the Catholic church Sunday by Bishop Coleman F. Carroll, Diocese of Miami, from this area are Steven Myer, 6740 SW 110th St., Troop 329, Epiphany parish; John Baumann, 5740 SW 46th Terrace. Dan and Van Golay, 2618 Columbus Blvd.; Fred Coolidge, 6405 NW 2nd St.; Tim Yopp, 5928 SW 49th St., all of Troop 26, Coral Gables Council Knights of Columbus. Arthur and Pat Sorace, 3240 SW 95th St.; Pat McEnany, 8221 SW 25th St.; Patrick J. Sutton, 5135 SW 97th Ct.; Frank Baia, 2720 SW 78th Ct.; and Richard Irvin, 4305 SW 98th St., all of St. Brandan's Parish. * * * Recent recipients of the Pro Dei et Patria award, religious award of the Lutheran faith were John and Pat Sullivan, 5353 SW 62nd Ave.; John Danker, 1350 Red Rd.; and Alex Kairies, 4115 Kiaora St., all from Troop 229, St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Tom Hutchinson, 13201 SW 63rd Ave., and William Younkin, 7575 SW 52nd Ave., Troop 382 of South Miami Lutheran Church. * * * Ten-Year Veteran awards, will be made to a Scouting family by the South Dade District, in recognition of volunteer service. Don Tener, and wife Ruth, and son Robert, of 3320 SW 97th Ave., have been active in this area with Mr. Tener serving as Assistant District Commissioner, Mrs. Tener as Cub Scouting trainer, and Robert as assistant scoutmaster of Troop 312, Coral Terrace Presbyterian Church. * * * Speaking of veteran awards brings to mind that many of the Scout and Cub units in our area, are "oldtimers." The oldest troop of the district, Troop 7, Coral Gables Kiwanis Club, 37 years old, shares that honor with Troop 21, Coconut Grove. Troop 43, Coral Gables American Legion, is 30 years old; Troop 23, South Miami Volunteer Fire Dept., 26 years old; Troop 16, Knights of Columbus, Coral Gables, celebrated its 25th anniversary recently; and Troop 38, First Methodist Church of Coral Gables, is over 21 years old. * * * Explorer Scouts, those fellows of high school age, are planning a series of activities in the coming months, which will include a return visit to the Key West Naval Base. Explorers participating last year were treated to a full day undersea trip on a Navy submarine, a day's outing on a surface vessel patrolling in the waters off Florida, and a day spent with the divers who taught skin diving techniques. It was reported that the Navy outdid all reports for generous and tasty foods, and limits will have to be enforced to prevent the enrollment from "swamping" the district officers. Lloyd Myer, Cabinet Advisor, met recently with representatives of district Explorer units, and District Cabinet Chairman Dick Martin, 4500 SW 64th Ct.; Steve Rodnon, 6007 SW 16th St., Vice Chairman; John Lackey, 4325 SW 87th Ave., Secretary; and Del Fye, 8155 SW 99th St., and Duane Hull, 7525 SW 134th St., assistant district commissioners for exploring, and District Commissioner Lewis "Duke" Cookerly. * * * The GUIDE has offered to print stories relating to Cub and Boy Scouting and Exploring. If you have interesting news from your pack, troop, or Explorer unit, please send it to Paul Brick, Boy Scouts of America, 4021 NW 7th St., Miami 44.
BE READY Saturday when a Boy Scout comes by to pick up that bag of old clothes for Goodwill Industries. Empty bags were distributed last week end by 900 Cub and Boy Scouts in this Scout District. Boy Scout Clayton Brasington III of 1234 Country Club Prado gave his first bag to his mother. Staff photo by Raymond Lang.
