IQ Tests Explained At Banyan

By MRS. ROBERT PARENT Correspondent Should parents be told the IQ scores of their children? Principal Benjamin Mingle discussed this and other aspects of intelligence tests at the Banyan Elementary School PTA program last week. In general, said Mingle, IQ scores are not accurate enough to give out the information. The reason for the lack of accuracy is that enough tests cannot be given the child for comparison. Through high school, he continued, the tests are more precise. In elementary school, the teacher's judgment of the tests should be consulted and his judgment of the child considered more exact. "Parents should certainly be told frankly and sincerely how a child functions in academic areas," Mingle said. A good IQ test measures a person's ability to acquire knowledge. This is a measurement of his potential. Achievement tests measure what a person knows. How is the average obtained? Authors of an IQ test set up norms and give their test to thousands of children of the same age. They determine an average score and thereafter each child who takes this test is said to have a mental age of the average child of that particular age. The IQ test was devised in France as a fast means of Army classification. While not always accurate, the tests do enable quick classification into broad categories.
