Lived Under Two Tyrannies

By MAURICE LABELLE A recent refugee from Nazi and Communist tyranny sums up her feeling for America in three words — "I love it." "I think people don't realize how fortunate it is to have freedom and liberty," said Mrs. Evi Rebecca Lombard, the new accident records clerk with the Coral Gables Police Department. It was the loss of freedom as a young girl in Estonia and the fear that accompanied it that made her realize freedom's importance, she said. We here in America are too concerned with worldly goods and not enough with our families, she said somewhat sadly. Escape To Freedom Mrs. Lombard knows how it is to lose family — she and her mother were the only ones lucky enough to escape to freedom. Others are dead or behind the Iron Curtain. From the living she hears occasionally in censored letters. "I was a very happy child," "We had a country home, but we lived in the city." Home was the seaport-seaside town of Parnu in that small Baltic country. Her name was Evi Rebecca Tamm then. Love of swimming, which she acquired as a young girl there, is the main thing that caused her to go first to Fort Lauderdale, where she lived for two years, and later to the Miami area. It was there that she met Marco Lombard. They were married recently and moved to Miami. Lombard is a civil engineering student at the University of Miami. The statuesque blonde smiles as she tells of her new life in America, but her mood becomes somber as she relates how the Soviets occupied her native land in the early 1940's. Come Out Of Hiding "I was too young to remember much about that," she said. The Tamms fled to the country and hid. The Nazis came later as Hitler launched an invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The Tamms came out of hiding, but Estonia was now under German rule. "I remember only the hard times," Mrs. Lombard said. Her mother held a post on the town council. Then came the Soviet counter-offensive of 1944 and the Tamms made plans to flee again. It was during the flight that Mrs. Lombard and her mother became separated from her father and brother, Elmo. That was the last time she saw them. By small boat they fled to Riga and later by ship to Hamburg, Germany. By then, Allied aerial pounding of German cities had become merciless. Hamburg was being hit almost daily. Much of the time was spent in bomb shelters. "Mother traded all her possessions for food. We stood in line for hours for horsemeat." Not knowing the language made communication difficult at first. Between bombings her mother worked in a German factory. "One morning she went to work and the factory wasn't there any more." Finally British troops landed and occupied the area. The taste of freedom was sweet to the young girl and her mother. They applied for visas to come to the United States after six years in the Germany they learned to hate. Chicago, where other Estonian refugees had settled, became their new home in 1950. But Chicago was too distant from the sea for the ocean-loving Evi. Fort Lauderdale beckoned: And then Miami. Will she ever return to Estonia? "I'd like to visit, but I don't think I'd like to live there," she said. "I don't think our country will ever be free," forgetting momentarily that she became a U.S. citizen five years ago.
