South Miami Roundup with Ed Knight
As are families, so is society. If well ordered, well instructed and well governed, they are the springs from which go forth the streams of national greatness and prosperity — of civil order and public happiness. — Thayer. IT WAS interesting to note in one of the dailies last week of the emphasis being put on the family in the planning for the new Westbrooke Country Club under construction now and due to open in the next several weeks at 8500 SW 8th St. ACCORDING to the planners, Sheldon Kay and Harold Moss, the club for benefit of the entire family has replaced the old type of country club where children should be talked of and not heard. For the first time in the South the family is being brought forth rather than the golfer, the socialite or the hard drinker in country club planning. AND THIS country club will be right in our neck of the woods. In an effort to find out just what the family wanted in a club, Kay and Moss took a survey in Miami before the club blueprints were drawn and found that the three most important elements people wanted in a club were agreeable people and friends, children's and teenagers' activities and pool facilities. AGREEABLE PEOPLE and friends are a matter of opinion, but the club will have plenty of childrens and teenagers' recreation facilities and perhaps the biggest pool in Florida. It will be built in the shape of a W so that it can be easily sectioned off for various age groups. BUT IN addition to the family activities, there also will be the bar (I don't think children will be allowed in there), the golf course and adult affairs. Togetherness has come a long way since the war. Maybe we started feeling sorry for children around 1945 and since then we have done something about it. CHILDREN seem to be growing up faster than usual these days. Maybe it's because of the added stress on family activities. Children, by being fitted into the family unit are associating more with the grownups than ever before and consequently are becoming more like adults at a younger age. WHEN WE go boating, the whole family goes. When a day at the beach is planned, it's the whole family that piles in the station wagon. Even on the golf courses, you see more teenagers than ever before — and they're golfing with dad instead of some of the fellows. I BELIEVE this is the one thing most responsible for the teenagers drinking at a younger age. If mom and dad take a drink several times a day, the high school set feels it would be okay to do the same. And consequently, the young people are drinking long before they should be. LIKE FATHER, like son. This expression has more meaning today than ever before primarily because of the added emphasis on the family unit rather than individuals in that unit. If mother has a new hair-do, the daughter wants one too. If father goes to college games, the son feels he should see these games rather than the high school games with his own set. AND NOW we have the country club for the entire family. It's the trend. There have been many such clubs built in the north and west. But the Westbrooke club will be the first one in the south. And I can't think of a better place to put it than the southwest section. INCIDENTALLY, if you want to see a scale model of Westbrooke, there's one in the lobby by the front door of City National Bank, 2701 Le Jeune Road. It includes the gigantic swimming pool, the handball and tennis courts and the buildings as they will look upon completion. THE PALMETTO Expressway hasn't been open a month and already pseudo traffic engineers are finding fault with it. One fellow said there are too many slow cars on the freeway. Still another claims there are not enough street markings on the expressway. ONE PERSON came off the expressway at North Kendall Drive intending to go east on North Kendall. There were no directions where the ramp meets North Kendall Drive so the driver went west instead of east. Should arrows point out the compass directions in coming off the expressway? I don't know. NOW WE HAVE a complaint that the termination point, where South Dixie joins the expressway for southbound cars is all fouled up. V. H. Burt, a builder erecting the huge Helmly Furniture Store at SW 100th St. and South Dixie Highway, thinks cars coming off the expressway should be allowed to make an immediate left turn onto South Dixie. WINSTON CARLTON, State Road Department district engineer thinks this would be an invitation to wholesale slaughter. Motorists now must get off the freeway and travel several blocks before being able to make a left turn. STILL OTHER motorists are objecting to the necessity of left turns at Coral Way and Bird Road to get onto the expressway going south. Going east on Coral Way you must make a left turn to get on and move south on the expressway. It requires crossing a Coral Way traffic lane and this could be dangerous. But it's there and what are we going to do about it. Even more dangerous is the narrowing of some of the streets from two to four lane arteries from points east and west of the expressway.
