"GEMS and FACETS" as presented by Mr. CARROLL

TV Lecturer, Gemstone and Diamond Authority, Member American Gem Society "Quotes" from recent TV shows "Super-Market Diamonds?" Do you wonder what has happened to the professional expert who you knew and trusted as an authority? Who conducted his business in a fine dignified manner? Diamonds and fine jewelry just don't belong with lawnmowers, cosmetics and lace panties. Don't you know how you'll treasure that important purchase if it is made from an authority on gemstones — in a fine atmosphere of integrity and dignity. It won't cost you a penny more. You can depend upon CARROLL'S JEWELERS MIRACLE MILE near LeJeune Rd. • Coral Gables

COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

COMPARE AND I Think you'll find that Dade Countians are getting the short end of the stick. It's a fact that per capita, Dade's citizens have less public oceanfront available than practically all Florida Counties bordering on either the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. YES, DADE is getting pretty near the end of the line on available undeveloped ocean or even bayfront property for bathing or boating. In the past, the oceanfront property has gone to the highest bidder. Hotels and motels have risen where bathing and boating property was once available. AND NOW we are suffering. On weekends the county parks and beaches are crowded to capacity. There is only one causeway to Crandon Park. And that causeway is jammed with cars every Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Labor Day last year was a good example of the crowded conditions at our county parks. YET WE'RE asking more and more tourists to settle in Dade County even though the available public beach property is becoming less and less. If we have reached capacity already in the amount of oceanfront available, what's to be done for the future? WELL, SIR, one answer to the question could be Islandia, that chain of islands lying in lower Biscayne Bay. There has been a lot of talk lately about Islandia. But one suggestion, made by County Commissioner Alex Gordon, was purely in the public interest. Commissioner Gordon's idea is for the county to purchase the islands (33 in all) and develop the chain into another Crandon Park. NOW BEFORE you laugh, think about it for awhile. It is not as ridiculous as it may sound at first. This would give Dade County both bayfront and oceanfront areas. It would include about 4,000 acres of high ground plus about another 4,000 acres of bottom land. Put it all together and you have a lot of land. COMMISSIONER Gordon believes that if the county bought the islands for anywhere between 12 to 20 million dollars and found it did not need all of it, it could sell some of the land for private use and use the money to develop the remaining county land. REMEMBER, it's the last available area for extensive bay or oceanfront facilities. And if the county wants to get it, it better act now. It would take a bond election to put the deal across, but it could be Dade's if the citizens vote for it. * * * WITH FOOTBALL season coming up at Coral Gables Stadium, why isn't a large sign erected at the stadium announcing the stadium schedule and a larger sign erected the day of a game announcing the two teams to participate. Many is the night I passed the field, seen the lights on and wondered what two teams were playing. It might help in the attendance.
