Biltmore's Trickier These Days

Biltmore Golf Course is going to be a bit more challenging starting tomorrow (Friday). Three new greens will be put into use then that will take a little more skill to negotiate, Pro William Tinder said this week. The greens are numbers three, four and 13. They have been entirely re-designed, said Tinder, and made more natural. A new type of grass has been used, and they are more softly undulated. But that isn't what will make them tougher, said Tinder. They will be wider, which will mean they will be easier to get on, but more difficult to putt. This is what separates the champions from the good golfers. The longer putt will require more skill. In addition, Green Number Three has been sand trapped from the front side. Golfers will be happy to see the end to the use of temporary greens, Tinder said.

Derry Nabs 1st Place

Larry Derry shot a 74-76-150 to take first place in the 16-year-old group of the annual Granada junior golf tournament Aug. 29-30. Rick Culver fired a 78-75-153 to capture the 15-year-old title, and Jock Mills won the 14-year-old division with an 80-79-150. Dane Mikkelsen was the 13-and-under winner with a 93-86-179. Runner-up in the 16-year-old division was Dick Nichols with a 159 for 36 holes. Scott Mikkelsen took second place in the 15-year-old bracket with a 162. Steve Halpern and Jerry Wood tied for the runner-up spot in the 14-year-old group, scoring 189 each. Steve Halpern won the play-off. Chuck Albury scored 186 to take second place in the 13-and-under class.

Sam Weissel Is Chairman For Benefit

Sam Weissel, 1432 Trillo Ave., a 38-year resident of this area and one of this city's pioneer businessmen, will be chairman of a benefit dinner Nov. 29 in behalf of Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. The $4,500,000 non-sectarian hospital at 1300 NW 14th St., is nearing completion. The non-profit facility is scheduled to open its doors in November. Named Honary chairman of the dinner affair to be held here is Col. Nat B. Rood of 840 Catalonia Ave., with Coral Gabelites Joseph Garfield, Lou Goldman, Aaron Barkin and Nat Winokur appointed as associate chairmen. Weissel's sons William, an attorney, and Roy, an interior decorator, will also serve as associate chairmen of the benefit affair.
