WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt

Fallout shelters! This is an item a lot of people have been discussing these days. Some take the subject extremely seriously; others discuss it in a lighter vein. Nevertheless, enough people are interested in the subject to make a few remarks for their consideration. State Director of Civil Defense Col. W. H. Tarkington has issued a warning that people considering purchasing fallout shelters should check thoroughly the contractor and the plans. He suggested that even though there is no "organized program" regarding shelters construction in the state, it would be a good idea that people planning shelters should check with local Civil Defense headquarters and that frequent inspections should be made while a shelter is under construction. These are good suggestions — but they don't seem to go far enough. For those people seriously considering shelters — and, I for one am still in the dark as to their safety value — the Civil Defense headquarters should issue strong regulations regarding their construction. All shelters built should be approved by Civil Defense headquarters and should be checked thoroughly by a licensed engineer. But, before this is done, in view of the seriousness with which fallout shelters are viewed, local leaders — governmental, Civil Defense, contractors — should find out exactly what specifications are suggested and should relay their findings to the public . . . not in generalities, but in specifics. It's this need for specifics regarding construction that prompted Col. Tarkington to warn in Jacksonville this week that the public should be careful of "phony deals" — of contracting for shelters which are not really safe. It might be the best idea of all that before anyone builds a shelter they first take a Civil Defense course and find out a little more about their needs. In fact, I think it would be a boon for every family to seriously take the Civil Defense course. ★ ★ ★ DEBATE UPCOMING: It'll be a no-holds barred debate Thursday, Sept. 14, when two speakers each from the pro-Metro forces and the McLeod Amendment backers go before the West Dade Citizens Association.
