Patio Project Going Ahead At SW; Special Classes, Too

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent Soon a new patio will grace the southside of the band room at Southwest High School. Only the removal by the county of gas pipes there hinders the construction of the patio which is one of the Student Council's main projects this year. When completed the patio may be used by students anytime. Within the next few years it is probable that a snack bar, juke box and other facilities will be added. Other Student council plans include homecoming activities with hopes of a bonfire. A trip to the Southern association of Student Councils in Amarillo, Texas, by Russell Bizzette and Julie Heiser is in the offing. HANDICAPPED Southwest doors are always open to those who are physically handicapped. The welfare and education of these students is the responsibility of the Special Education Department. Mrs. Mildred Yeagle, department head, says that most of these students have problems with hearing, seeing, and walking. The class is made up of grade 10, 11, 12, and although some must remain in the Special Education room during most of the school day, others capable of doing more advanced work attend regular classes. JRC Working for the Junior Red Cross can have unexpected rewards. Ask Janet Ferguson, who attended the Leadership Training Course at Camp Green Cove, Tuxedo, N.C. While visiting Washington, D.C., with her parents, she took time out to visit the National Red Cross Headquarters. She had been asked by our chapter here to check with them regarding the Dade County delegate to go to a meeting in Chile. At headquarters, Janet met the Chilean Ambassador who invited her to a tea honoring all the 22 delegates at the Chilean Embassy the next day. Janet met all of the delegates as well as many dignitaries. LANGUAGE Southwest has entered the fourth year of language laboratory — the teaching of a language involving tape recordings and earphones — and is the only school in Dade County to do so extensively. Heading the language Department is Alfonso Alonso, a linguistics expert. It is he who originates the tape recordings for elementary school children. He is responsible for the assembling of audio-lingual equipment and has cut the cost of $20 earphones to $3 by putting them together himself. Assisting in the laboratory are Mrs. Claire Orkin, Mrs. Sue Addington, John Allen, William Altman, Gerald Bennett, Mrs. Margery Ann Jenkins, Robert Lowenthal, Miss Ruth Meltzer, and Mrs. Gloria Ramirez.

ART TIMES

By Robert S. Hurwitz Beards, brushes and blue jeans. Not the name of a song, instead, that which you but may find if you visit Miami's will see if you visit Coconut Greenwich Village in Coconut Grove. Many of our artists have camped in the Grove simply because the Grove wants them and lets them know it. The scene was made more interesting last month, by the opening of the Robert von Zimmermann Gallery at 3004 Grand Avehue. It's a small gallery, large in quality, with mature paintings for the discriminate. Von Zimmermann runs a big scale in technique and subject. The vitality and projection of his figures register viewer impact at once. He has had the fortunate opportunity to train with and talk to the best of our masters. He has learned the lessons of the contemporary school, but has adjusted intellectually to his own methods and styles. Experiment with subject and material is in evidence and gives a good change of pace to his major works. The gallery is actually run by his bride, Arlene von Zimmermann. Here's a gal who believes in art, people, and her favorite artist's ability. So now, in one afternoon in the Grove, you can visit our "Coconut Village," and see Massin, Scornavacca, Varna, von Zimmermann, Draper (Mirrell) and the Grove House. Everyone wants a bargain but if you really have a "wholesale, undercost complex," do me, and the artists a favor, and shop at Shell's Super Market. The group of artists listed above, are most of our town's best, and they deserve the chance to create rather than argue price. This goes for some of the decorators who harrass the artists, fault their clients and generally create ill will by their untempered aloofness. Now, more than any This year in history, people other in local art, opportun- ple will have a big oppor- ity to look at, and buy good art at prices they can truly afford. My war against prints, copies and bare walls is on. The pleasure and the beauty of original paintings in a period of world ugliness, should be a good relief. Your interest in seeing all art at all galleries is needed and invited.

Art Discussion

The second Times and Guide Art Discussion group will meet at the Graxville Gallery, 3929 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 8:30 p.m. Art Editor Robert S. Hurwitz conducts the group. He invites "anyone interested in frank, lively, no holds-barred participation."
