You Can Die Inside Fallout Shelter; Buy Carefully
There has been criticism in recent weeks as to the lack of information made available to the public concerning the best construction of fallout or "bomb" shelters. It is in this interest that we reproduce the following information from the Metropolitan Dade County Safety Department. "It would appear from reports that considerable misinformation is being given to the public regarding radioactive fallout and the construction of protective shelters," said Colonel H. W. Tarkington, state director of Civil Defense. Radioactive fallout, he said, consists of invisible, and sometimes barely visible, particles of soil, buildings, and other matter which has been literally atomized by the explosion of a nuclear weapon. Thousands of tons of matter are carried into the upper air and drift to earth downwind for hundreds of miles. These particles are made radioactive and emit gamma rays in all directions similar to light, and heavy penetration of the human body can cause severe sickness. Over exposure will cause death. SIMILAR TO X-RAYS Since these gamma rays are similar to X-rays, their penetration can only be stopped by shielding. There is nothing mysterious about radioactive fallout, there is no mystery drug that can be taken to lessen its effects, and there is no protective clothing. The only protection a human being can secure is to be covered by material which is sufficiently dense to absorb the gamma rays. The emission of gamma rays is measured in roentgens, and it is estimated that approximately 3,000 roentgens per hour will be emitted by fallout in the immediate area outside the blast and heat area of a detonated nuclear bomb where persons could survive. Persons exposed to over 600 roentgens in one hour, or 100 roentgens for six hours, would not survive. Radioactivity decays with time, therefore, shelter is recommended for a period of two weeks, at which time the roentgen rate would probably be negligible. THICKNESS NEEDED In order to have an adequate shelter it is required that certain thicknesses of material between the radioactive fallout and the persons inside. Commonly available shielding materials are steel, concrete, earth and wood. Halfvalue layer thicknesses of these materials is 0.7 inches of steel, 2.2 inches of concrete, 3.3 inches of earth, and 8.8 inches of wood. This means that an outside radiation of 3,000 roentgens would be reduced to 1,500 roentgens by passing through 2.2 inches of concrete, reduced to 750 roentgens by passing through an additional 2.2 inches of concrete, etc. From this it can be seen that the equivalent of approximately 22 inches of concrete would be required to reduce the radiation of 3,000 roentgens per hour to approximately 3 roentgens per hour within the shelter, and this amount would be harmless. HOMES NO PROTECTION It can readily be seen that the approximate two inches of concrete in the normal house constructed of concrete blocks would afford little or no protection to the occupants. The bearing walls in present houses could not support the weight of concrete or earth that would be required to afford the ceiling protective against gama radiation. Without extensive remodeling and sealing of entries such as windows and doors it is not possible to utilize present house construction for adequate shelter. The exception of course are those few houses in Florida which have underground basements, in which basement shelters can be constructed. Since gamma rays are similar to light they do not go around corners, therefore little or no radiation can enter shelters through the designed ventilators which can be equipped with a dust filter. All persons constructing a fallout shelter should consult their local civil defense officials as to the adequacy of their proposed shelter, Tarkington said.

ATTENTION! ORCHID GROWERS
ADV. ATTENTION! ORCHID GROWERS Orchids should not be left outside during a hurricane. Take them into the garage, work shop or some other sheltered place. If this is not possible, lay them on their side and cover them with wire such as screen, chicken wire or fish net. Fasten covering solidly to the ground. If you live near salt water and must leave your orchids outside, rinse them off as soon as possible after the storm and then allow them to dry for a few days, also rinse covering or shade trees. This applies even if you live as far as 10 miles from the Bay. Brant Orchid Supply will repot them for you if needed and we also keep Orchid supplies at all times. 2970 S.W. 27th Ave. Ph. HI 3-5544
