At SW High It's the Twist

By JOY CHERRY Herald Correspondent The Twist is sweeping the country, not failing to include Miami in its campaign. A unique dance adopted by the young set is bringing big plans to Bob Seal, a Southwest Miami High School senior. An experienced twister, Bob is the originator of the Miami "Twist-a-Thon," a dance where the twist is the only step done. The "Twist-a-Thon" is now in the process of being copyrighted. The first dance is Nov. 18, in the Cutler Ridge auditorium. Continuous live twist music and three trophies for the best twisters will highlight this "Miami First." The doors will open at 8 p.m. at which time a dollar will be collected from each twister. After a summer vacation in New York, where he attended a dance of this type, Bob began making plans for his own. Ben Goodner and Bob are the backers of this idea. Bob hopes eventually to develop it into a weekly affair. "Miami needs something different to keep the interests of its youths. I hope the 'Twist-a-Thon' will be the solution," commented Bob. Bob, who declares himself an average teen, makes above average grades, holds a part-time job, and plays basketball while at the same time plans his future as a world history teacher. "It started in the younger group, and adults are now doing it; the twist is here to stay," said Bob.

THE LANCER Traffic Safety Committee at Southwest High is planning a county-wide student traffic safety council with the help of other Dade schools. In an effort to combat traffic deaths and accidents, the members will develop special projects and promotions for traffic improvement. William Frawley, public information and safety education officer for the Metropolitan Court, spoke to the journalism classes last week, and presented an array of statistics concerning teenage driving in Dade County. Through his aid entrance and exit signs have been painted on the north student parking lot.

Plans are under way for a special promotion at Southwest in mid-November. With members of the football team leading off, students will have an opportunity to bang on a car with iron mallets. After they have done their best to demolish it, a car wrecked by an accident will be brought to the campus for comparison. The Lancer will publish the best article written about the cars.

those on the Muskogee Reservation. "The paper is to inform our people of what the Seminoles are doing, and what other people are doing to the Seminoles," says Alice. Alice Osceola has attended Southwest since ninth grade first newspaper while still in her teens. The Seminole News, which comes out monthly is distributed to the Indians of the Tamiami Trail Villages and to SOUTHWEST'S Alice Joy Osceola is probably the only student at Southwest who is an editor of an entire nation's and will have the honor of being the first Seminole to graduate from high school.

A FOUR piece sectional beige sofa has added to the appearance of the faculty lounge due to the efforts of the Thespian Honor Society. Under the direction of Mrs. Lou McLean, the Thespians presented to the faculty, who aided the group in their production of "No Time For Sergeants," a sofa which the lounge has needed for some time.

THE CONCERT Chorus and Orchestra will combine their talents by performing Nov. 17, under the direction of Philip Fink and Mrs. Margaret DeSola. With a patriotic theme, the orchestra will play the first movement of "The Fifth Symphony," "La Vie Parisienne," "Mississippi Suite," "English Folk Song Suite," "Sandpiper Ballet," and the Concert Chorus will present patriotic music in a variety of surprise features.

West of the City

Continued from Page 1 only is an affront to our basic freedoms but gives us a false sense of values. It heaps on us the possibility of making popular some work of a writer or movie maker which would be passed without notice if it hadn't received the publicity of a "book burning." I prefer to rely on the belief that any normal intelligent person whose reading is important to him will be able to tell the difference between trash and good literature.
