with Ed Knight In this day of missiles, atomic energy and mechanical rides, what is the attitude of the present-day child on that oldest of all means of recreation, the pony ride? "The kids still love it," says Hugh Reynolds, owner of Reynolds Pony Ring, 7242 Bird Road. "I've never seen a youngster that wasn't crazy about a pony ride. They always have been. They always be, I suppose." "Of course, I've seen some children that were a little scared about getting up on a pony for the first time. But once they're up there, they want to go around and around the ring. "And it's not limited to the children, either. There are some teenage girls that come in here every week for a ride. I guess they can't afford a horse or a pony of their own. They just like to ride the ponies." Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are Reynolds' biggest days. Sometimes as many as 200 youngsters come in for pony rides and, believe it or not, the grandparents take their grandchildren as often as the parents. The ponies begin work about 9:30 a.m. and walk, trot and run around Reynolds' ring until about dark. Monday is the ponies' and Reynolds' day off. Where do the ponies go when they are finished working for the day? "I have some stalls out at SW 112th Avenue and S.W. 32nd Street" said Reynolds, a large, blond-haired man who has owned his pony ring for almost three years. Those mechanical pony, missile and stagecoach rides in front of neighborhood super markets and drug stores, are they giving Reynolds competition? "Sure they are," said Reynolds, patting one of his Palomino ponies. "But those toys are mostly for the younger children. They break down a lot and there's a chance the kids may be shocked, They're mechanical. "They shake the kids up a little and they imagine they're on a real pony. But it's not the same. "Riding a pony is one of a child's greatest experiences. He associates himself with cowboys on television. He can feel the pony under him, can smell the pony and there's a sense of excitement about the whole ride. "And they keep coming back, too." Although cars whiz past Reynolds' pony ring on Bird, there's a sense of the past in a child climbing up on pony, holding the reins and circling a large ring three times. Farther west on Bird Road there's a Go-Kart ring that offers speed and the smell of gasoline to the youngster. But it doesn't stay as busy as Reynolds' Pony Ring. Karts don't interest the kiddies like ponies do.
