South Miami Undecided About Site for Garage

South Miami Council Tuesday night of last week did an about face on the purchase of a vacant new and used car agency for a new city garage. The city was prepared to spend some $175,000 for the purchase of buildings at Ludlam Rd. and South Dixie Hwy. formerly occupied by Othling-Williams Plymouth dealership. The new purchase was to replace an old, outgrown and unsuited city garage at 5800 SW 72nd Ave. On third and final reading of an ordinance authorizing the purchase, two council members voted against the bill, thus halting negotiations. It takes a four-fifths Council majority to authorize expenditures. The two councilmen voting against the purchase were Wallace Rinz and Joe Kline. Toward the end of the meeting, Councilman George Gibbons questioned the two councilmen on their reasons for voting against the purchase. Both councilmen stated their reasons after which Gibbons asked for a reconsideration of the ordinance vote. This motion was passed after which Councilman Kline made another motion tabling the re-consideration until the Nov. 21 meeting. This motion also carried. As the ordinance stands now, Council on Nov. 21 again will have the opportunity to authorize or reject the purchase. "I voted no to the purchase," said Councilman Kline, "because I think the price is too high for the use we will put to the building and because the appraised value is less than the asking price." Mayor Tevis retorted, however, that the city has been looking for about five years for a suitable location for the new city garage and felt that Council agreed with him that the Talcott property was the answer. The purchase was recommended by City Manager C. B. Petry. If purchased, the new garage will be used for a garage, workshops, maintenance areas, storage areas and recreation facilities. In other action, Council: PASSED on first and second readings an ordinance establishing an RU-5 zoning category whereby residential-appearing buildings can be constructed for use as professional buildings in residential areas. Final reading on the ordinance will be held at the Nov. 21 Continued on Page 4

Help Aged Thru Social Security?

Should medical care for the aged be financed through social Security? This question will be debated affirmatively by Don Black and negatively by Dr. Jerome Waters at Monday's meeting of the Southwest Democratic Club. The meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. at West Miami Town Hall, 901 SW 62nd Ave. The public is invited. Questions from the audience will be answered by the speakers, according to Robert Fensholt, president of the club.

COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

ZONING-One of the many reasons why many West Daders want to incorporate is because of the poor zoning decisions being handed out by the county Planning and Zoning Board and the County Commission in downtown Miami. HERE'S ONE example: there are a total of 17 service stations of one breed or another between 67th and 87th Aves. on Bird Road. This is entirely too many gas stations for any 20-block area - but the county doesn't seem to care. CORAL WAY also is becoming another gas station alley from 67th Ave. west and unless something is done, we'll have rows and rows of service stations in West Dade. IS ZONING a county or a municipal function? I think zoning is a municipal function, with minimum county standards. Since West Dade has no representation on the county commission, the zoning decisions pertaining to West Dade are being made by a group of men who know nothing of and care little about West Dade. * * * NOT TO BE OUTDONE by Coral Gables which has the Junior Orange Bowl, South Miami this year is going to have its own bowl game - The Turkey Bowl. It'll be played on the Saturday following Thanksgiving at South Miami Junior High School Field. THE TWO teams opposing each other in the bowl are from South Miami and Atlanta, Georgia. They are of 115 lb. weight and both teams are outstanding in their respective areas. The Atlanta teams has lost but two of 80 games. THE ATLANTANS will arrive on Thanksgiving Day and will be bunked at the homes of boys on the South Miami team. The two teams will spend Friday sightseeing and then knock heads on Saturday. How's this for togetherness? * * * SCHOOLS - After spending several hours at both an elementary and a junior high school during National Education Week last week, I can truthfully say that schools have changed radically since the days when I attended pre-senior high school. FIRST THEY dine you and then show you the school and your youngster's good and bad work. And the dinner was catered yet. Then, at the junior high, the band gave a concert and it sounded like nothing I'd ever heard from junior high bandsmen. They were good, plenty good. THERE IS more contact Continued on Page 4
