ART TIMES

By Robert S. Hurwitz Miami is murder on local artistic talent. For the painter who has the talent, ambition and guts to try in this town, there's little or no opportunity to exhibit work, except probably in his own garage. If you're one of those "this town's void of culture" critics, then blame yourself and not the artist. There are, at least 20 good serious artists in our town now who have important contributions but who can't find an outlet for exhibition. Time and again the question is asked, "Well, who do I contact?" or, "Where could I have a show?" Fact is, there's a total scarcity of art galleries. Those that are open have little room for the newcomer, little known — or untested-talent. Lack of space is not their fault, for it's tribute to the few around that they are even around. An artist looking for his first exhibition fares better at a known gallery, naturally. However, there's little chance to break the barrier of the galleries' sacred cow selection of tea-party painters, art teachers, friends, patrons and money givers. So, unless it's a traveling exhibit or a loaner show, you won't find fresh new talent on display or the excitement of discovery, or the chance to see and buy new art. CLOTHESLINE SALE Most good artists dislike the "clothesline sale" being seen so often in shopping centers, etc. This event is temporary and offers little chance of recognition. Most, however, enter their paintings to earn some bread. I'm not knocking these sales, they have a big place in the art world, but the real painter can't get his paintings to talk and come through in the wind, sun and rain. Some banks and savings and loan associations have been good examples of providing an outlet exhibiting paintings. Their selection of paintings has been encouragingly good. Country clubs have shown a willingness to exhibit and even businesses have found it good business to sponsor shows. This is all good and fine, but the drive, determination, leadership and guts have been at a standstill. PAID POLITICAL Wouldn't it be wonderful if one of our politicians would cry foul for the artist and urge a platform of cultural action, as they yell to fix roads, tickets, corruption and fraud. For a promise of "try to help" the cultural spirit of Miami and create exhibition possibilities. I offer any candidate who will speak up, at least one big vote, probably several thousand and who knows, maybe more. So Patten and High and Shiver, from the pit of many empty stomachs, overgrown hair and unshaved beards, we offer you a new plank to paint a picture on. WHY NOT USE IT!
