For 16-Year-Old Gay It's Flying Not Driving License
By ADELE SITKIN Correspondent "I've been told that once you fly a Stearman, you can fly just about anything, and now that I've finished my first solo, I feel real good." Monday was Gay Morris' birthday, and now that she was finally 16 years old, she could make her solo flight. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Morris Jr., Gay flew in a two-wing, PT-17 Stearman, a bi-plane used during World War II for training pilots. The plane is owned by her father who has been flying for 14 years. Her instructor, C. M. McClendon believes that this is the first time a girl so young has soloed in a two-winged plane. "Gay has been flying airplanes before she drove a car," her mother said. "And this is the day," according to her mother, "that Gay and quite a few others have been waiting for." Gay had one thing in mind as she took off. "I wanted to make a smooth, nice landing - if at all. I wasn't nervous." About 20 of her friends were there to see the long awaited flight at Brown's Airport. They all had to wait until Gay got out of school. She is president of he Aviation Club at Palmetto High School where she is a junior. About her flying Gay's mother said, "I've got a few butterflies in my stomach about this, but I wouldn't think of stopping her." The plane, which has an open cockpit, is rather big for just two passengers. Gay wears goggles and a leather helmet for weather protection. The teenage pilot began flying at 14. She lives at 10790 SW 74th Ave., right next to Brown's Airport, part of Aero Country Club where the plane is kept.
