with Ron Levitt BLOOPERS: Overheard at a recent downtown luncheon session of some prominent local businessmen: One businessman was telling about a client who was building a home in South Miami. The building was 50 per cent complete before it was discovered he was building on the wrong lot ... on the lot next door to the one he had purchased. (Fortunately for the man, the owner of the lot on which he was building switched sites with him). As soon as this story was told, the other luncheon guests brought forth a few bloopers they knew about. One told about a couple in Our Town who went away for the weekend only to come home and find that their house had been painted. When they checked on it, they learned the painters had come to their home instead of the same address on the next block. Another businessman told a similar story about a swimming pool concern which began work on a pool—but in the yard next door. But the story which really intrigued some of the businessmen at this meeting was the following: It was told that when work began on the dredging of Biscayne Bay just a few weeks ago in order to build the new port at Dodge Island, dredging continued for three days before it was discovered that the work crews were dredging at the wrong island in the Bay. * * * GAS LIGHTS: We doubt whether Florida Power and Light Co. will go wild over this news—but the new Parkchester development at S.W. 87th Ave. and 16th St. will have street lights throughout the housing area—and the lights will be gaslights. For oldtimers these lights should provide some nostalgia. The Victorian-era lights, for those who have never seen them, provide pale pools of yellowish light rather than the brightness of electric lamps. And, gaslights NATURALLY don't need overhead electric wires. This is the first time in so-called modern days that gaslights have been installed in South Florida, although several Southern and Northern cities have put them "back" in the past few years. * * * MISCELLANEOUS MEMOS: Southwest residents are hoping the Palmetto By-Pass will do away with the old-time traffic jams in the Tropical Park area when the racetrack opens today. By the way, a large percentage of the profits of today's Tropical opening goes to the University of Miami ... New operators of the Coconut Grove Theater are creating a lot of good will in honoring season's tickets sold by the former backers. The theater re-opens Tuesday, Nov. 28., with William Bendix in the musical "Take Me Along" ... Big name entertainment—including jazz and semi-classical concerts—are being proposed for Dade County Auditorium by Alan Sherr and Jordan Gilman; the same two local men are producing the Judy Garland concert on the Beach this Saturday. They want to do six concerts a year, in the city-side ... Northwestern and Florida to-go before Miami is offered a bowl bid. Gator Bowl and Gotham Bowl definitely have Miami in mind.
