Homecoming Spirit Fills the Air at Palmetto
By EUNICE TALL Correspondent Homecoming spirit is in the air! This morning (Thursday) at 10 the Palmetto Panthers will challenge the South Dade Rebels in the annual Thanksgiving Day Homecoming football game. The game, getting underway at Homestead Park, will conclude this year's Palmetto football schedule. Tonight at 8 p.m. the first annual Palmetto Homecoming Dance, sponsored by the Palmetto senior class, will be presented to alumni, seniors and juniors. Tickets are $1.50. The dance will be held in the Palmetto cafeteria, 7460 S.W. 118 St. ★ ★ ★ In recognition of American Education Week, Nov. 5-11, five Palmetto leaders spoke to the student body on various educational topics. A weekly theme followed in all Dade County schools was "Time for a Progress Report." This theme was carried out Nov. 6 at Palmetto by George Miller, president of National Honor Society, who spoke on the topic, "Time to Decide on Essentials." Nov. 7: "Time to Work Together," Pete Andrus, president of Student Council. Nov. 8: "Time to Explore New Ideas." John Evans, president of Phi Beta Chi, science honorary. Nov. 9: "Time to Salute Good Teachers," Kay Cadman, president of Future Teachers Club. Nov. 10: "Time to Pay the Price for Excellence," Dale Heckerling, president of Mu Alpha Theta, math honorary. ★ ★ ★ Proceedings of Mrs. Bettye Collins' first year Spanish class were recently taped for a special Education Television nProgram, "Know Your Schools to be shown Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. on Channel 2. Representing Palmetto on this program are Lynn Yeoman, Barbara Woodruff, Bill Garcia, Allen Hindman, Alan Jacobson, Sybil Sernaker and Jackie Wilson. A class discussion, using the latest items of language laboratory equipment, was demonstrated Nov. 8 by Palmetto French students in Richard's Department Store window on the corner of North Miami Avenue and First St. The class discussion held by first and second year students under the direction of Mrs. Jacques Wilson, was piped onto the street so that passers-by could observe and hear an actual class in session. Eleven Palmetto boys will participate in the Palmetto Gymnastics Team this year. They are Roy Dupree, Norman Dumont, Troy Dupree, Rae MacDougall, George Miller. Tom Owens, Joe Riviera, Ken Roberts, Bill Sherry, Butch and Mike Uhl.
Charles Nichols Fills New Post
Charles A. Nichols, a native Miamian, has been appointed to the newly created post of division personnel manager for Southern Bell Telephone Co. in South Florida. Nichols, who has been district plant manager for the utility in Gainesville since 1958, spent a year in personnel work in Jacksonville in 1957. He joined Southern Bell in 1941 here as a Cable Splicers Helper after graduation from the University of Miami with a degree in electrical engineering. The remainder of his telephone career was spent in the plant department. He resides with his wife and five children at 8881 SW 87th Ave.
Gonzalez Buys Pizza Palace
Iran Gonzalez, former manager of Pizza Palace, has purchased the franchise at the Red Bird Shopping Center. Gonzalez lives at 3521 NW 172nd St. This is the sixth in the chain of Pizza Palaces. Gonzalez has 13 years in the restaurant field and has been with Pizza Palace for the past 11⁄2 years.
