Even the Mayor Backs Mr. Claus

The following proclamation has been issued by Miami Mayor Robert King High: "WHEREAS Santa Claus will pay a special visit to Miami on Friday, November 24, to open officially the 1961 Christmas Season in Greater Miami, and "WHEREAS, thousands of Miami children and their parents will have the opportunity to meet Santa Claus and give last minute hints of what they want for Christmas, and "WHEREAS, I know that if the children were good during the year, Santa Claus will do his best to see that everyone gets what he or she wants most, and "WHEREAS, all of us hope Santa Claus can stay in Miami for a while to enjoy our sunshine, but we know that he must get back to make final arrangements for his Christmas Eve journey around the world, "NOW, THEREFORE, Robert King High, Mayor of the City of Miami, Florida, do hereby proclaim Friday, November 24, 1961 SANTA CLAUS DAY in Miami and in observance thereof, I do hereby urge all the people of Miami to give Santa Claus a big Miami welcome when he arrives at Watson Island at 10 A.M., and I urge all Miami children to be as good as they can be between now and Christmas."

Your Boy May Win The Prize

Here's the chance for some boy between the ages of six and 12 to become Mayor of Santa Claus Land, Santa Claus, Ind. Of course, there's another important stipulation: he must have been born on Christmas day. The contest is being co-sponsored by Central Shopping Plaza, where the one and only official Santa Claus will arrive Friday. Boys meeting the proper qualifications can enter the contest by sending a letter of 25 words or less on "Why I Would Like to be Mayor of Santa Claus Land," together with a photograph, to "Mayor", Station WINZ, Biscayne Terrace Hotel, Miami, Fla. Winner of the local contest will receive a bicycle and be automatically entered in the national contest. The contest ends Friday, Dec. 8.

Singers Are Invited

An open invitation to all choral groups to enter a Christmas Carol singing contest, has been issued by Central Shopping Plaza, NW 37th Avenue and 7th Street. The contest will take place during the Christmas season, with groups appearing from day to day at times set by the center's Merchants Association. There will be no competitive singing, and the winning group will be selected on the basis of overall musical diction and interpretation. Interested groups are asked to contact Central Shopping Plaza at NE 4-4571. The winner will be announced Dec. 20.

Festive Decor At Central Plaza

When Central Shopping Plaza officially opens its own and Miami's Christmas season Friday, the festive array of unique decorations and attractions should make it the most outstanding Christmas showcase in the South. Under the supervision of Bollinger & Associates, Central's promotion firm, the center will be transformed into what every child dreams Santa Claus Land, and what it stands for, would be like. Features in Santa Claus' "Land of Fantasy" - including a striking Nativity Scene, an action-packed toyland, a post office, a deer farm and sleigh shed, and Santa's own throne, were all constructed by Weiser Creations. The entire program is sponsored by Radio Station WINZ and the Central Shopping Plaza Merchants Association in cooperation with the Landlord A. Cantor Associates.
