ART TIMES
By Robert S. Hurwitz The Miami art world stood up and cheered as the 41 Old Master's paintings and four pieces of sculpture, donated by the Kress Foundation, were displayed at the University of Miami Lowe Gallery last week. No doubt about if, this fills a giant need for the community and art colony. Yes, it's really true; we really have a fine noteworthy selection of world famous paintings here, in big cultural Miami. One thing for sure, Lowe Gallery has assumed the unquestionable role as ruler of the Miami art world. Its leadership is proved. One of my true delights will be to visit the gallery often and appraise each painting in detail, as each person should do. For now, let's take the word of Dr. John Walker, directly from the National Gallery in Washington, who called this one of the finest collections of 14th through 18th century art made available by the Kress Foundation. He called the paintings eloquent and an example of sheer poetry for every art lover or student to admire. He called modern day art too pretty to be distinguished and too dashing to be lasting. He hit hard at Florida's natural roadside beauty being destroyed by billboards. He exuded love in his admiration for 14th-18th century art and seemed disturbed by America's lack of contributions to the art world. Although I consider Dr. Walker to be a critic extra-ordinary, his cobweb views on modern art and its contributions are wrong and jaded. It's just a shame that the active leadership taken by Americans in the contemporary movement does not have the benefit of encouragement by Americans. DR. JOHN WALKER (right), director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., chats with Robert S. Hurwitz, art editor for The Guide, last week at a black-tie affair at Lowe Art Gallery.
