Hospital Pushing for Elevators

Raymond F. Poore, administrator of South Miami Hospital, challenged the women's auxiliary this week at its general meeting to conduct a concentrated campaign to raise funds for a needed patient-emergency elevator. "We need $28,000 before March, when the elevator is installed," said Poore. "This is our most urgent need. At the present time 105 patients daily are forced to share two low-speed elevators with 360 visitors, 250 employes and 100 doctors. Express travel to all hospital services is desperately needed, especially for emergency use." Poore continued by saying that the 130-bed hospital, which serves over 70,000 people in South Dade, has been operating at over 90% capacity, and that demands for hospital services are increasing. He stated that because of the increasing demand, the hospital is now in the process of completing the third floor facilities, which will provide 30 more beds. "This expansion will further necessitate the installation of a third elevator," said Poore. "Realizing the eventual need to expand from the original facilities, an elevator shaft was built into the hospital opposite the emergency room. Upon completion, it will furnish expedient service to x-ray, lab, surgery, pharmacy, and the patients will have much-desired privacy. "In addition to emergency service, it will mean that food wagons can go right from the kitchen backdoor to the patients' rooms without going through the main hallway." Mrs. John Koval, president of the auxiliary, presented Poore's challenge to the auxiliary's general membership, and the project was unanimously accepted. The organization will appeal to the community for contributed funds. "We have never before asked for contributions," said Poore. "Although this is a community hospital, built because of a definite need and financed with a public bond issue, it is entirely non-profit and none of the taxpayers' money has been used for construction or operation. "Now we need assistance, and we know that we can count on community support." Contributions may be mailed to the hospital in care of "Elevator Fund."
