Panther Is Prowling at Palmetto High

By EUNICE TALL Correspondent Coming to Palmetto High Nov. 22 is the event of events. Excitement and anticipation reign over Palmetto as the first annual homecoming, the Panther Prowl, approaches. Kicking-off the Prowl at 4 p.m. will be a huge parade. Colorful floats entered by Palmetto clubs, teams, and classes, and decorated cars will comprise this parade headed by the Homecoming queen and her court. The parade will begin at school and travel to Suniland Shopping Center. The queen will be announced Nov. 22 in the special homecoming edition of the Palmetto Panther, newspaper. Her Majesty is selected from one of these senior princesses: Cathy Copley, Kay Seiler, Marlou Morton, Mary VanderBrook and Sandy Griffiths. Representing the junior class in her court are Gloria Germain and Micki McClure. Sophomore Class: Susie Duckworth. Freshman Class: Leslie Kehoe. Next on the agenda of Prowl events (following the parade) will be a Thanksgiving dinner sponsored by the Palmetto Booster's Club. The dinner will last from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Following dinner, skits prepared by clubs will be performed around a huge bonfire. Cheerleaders will be leading cheers all evening to augment the festivities of the Panther Prowl. Thursday morning (Nov. 23) at 10 the Palmetto Panthers will challenge the South Dade Rebels in the homecoming football game at Homestead Park. Topping off Prowl activities 1961, will be a semi formal Homecoming Dance sponsored by the senior class Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The dance is open to juniors, seniors, and alumni. Tickets for the dance are $1.50. Admission to the entire Prowl is $1.25. Six senior college students are presently interning at Palmetto. Teaching experience and classroom procedures will be gained first hand in this way under the direction of qualified school teachers. Mrs. Joan Gruen, from the University of Miami, is assisting Mrs. Marlene Linquist in the Palmetto art department. Two interns are gaining teaching experience in the English department. Mrs. Carol Morrison, who is aiding Miss Carolyn Davidson, attends the University of Miami. Miss Elinor Ready, sister to Palmetto student Roberta Ready, is interning under Mrs. Lillian Tysinger, English teacher. Miss Ready who graduated at Miami High, is attending Florida State. Another graduate of a Miami High school is Miss Saralee Smith, from Coral Gables High School. She interns under Charlie Schwab in Palmetto civics classes, American government and Latin and American history classes. In the biology department Mrs. Josephine Woodmansee is working under H. Meyer. Another biology intern is Sam Porco who aids Mrs. Mary Louise Evans and Foster Smith. The first of many vocational breakfasts was held in the Palmetto cafeteria Nov. 9. Guest speaker Joseph Tarpley, assistant dean of music at the University of Miami, spoke to students and members of the Palmetto faculty on careers and opportunities open in the musical field. More than 60 students and teachers were present.
