BB Vandals Pepper Windows At Bird-Red

BB-gun vandals had a field day at Red-Bird Shopping Center over the weekend. Plate glass windows in three separate stores at the shopping center, on the northwest corner of Red and Bird Roads, were damaged by BB-gun pellets. Metro police, investigating the case, say they have no leads at this time. But they are sure the vandalism was done by juveniles. Hardest Hit Three Sisters Women's Apparel was the hardest hit. Store supervisor, Leon Rubinstein, said seven windows and a glass door were riddled with BB-shots. Also hit were Belk's Department Store and Butler's Shoe Store. Butler's reported one BB-hole and Belk's several holes. Damage to Three Sisters was reported at $1500 in plate glass. Belk's may have to replace a window as a result of the vandalism. Not First Time "This is not the first time this has happened," Rubinstein said, "and we're not going to let it pass unnoticed." He blamed unruly juveniles for the damage. Rubinstein said this is the third time in four years that such vandalism has occurred.

Couple Lose Jewels, Cash To Two Gunmen

Some $8400 in jewelry and $640 in cash was taken during an armed robbery in the driveway of a South Miami residence Wednesday evening, Jan. 25. Robbed were Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Green, 6200 SW 79th St. According to South Miami police, the two unmasked bandits, armed with revolvers, took Mrs. Green's purse containing most of the valuables and a ring from Green's finger. Valuable Ring Green's ring was valued at $3600. In Mrs. Green's purse were seven other pieces of jewelry amounting to some $4800 in value, the cash and valuable papers. The Greens said a car followed them into their driveway after they had returned from a shopping trip. The two men got out of the car and approached either side of their car. "Just take it easy," said the bandit on Green's (the driver) side of the car. He then jerked the ring off Green's finger. Purse Seized The thief on Mrs. Green's side of the car tried jerking the purse away from Mrs. Green. She held on as best she could, finally losing out to her opponent. The purse handle broke, however, with Mrs. Green keeping the handle. The thugs escaped in a late model Chevrolet. There was no explanation given for the valuables being in the purse.

Biltmore Golf Course Restaurant Burglarized

Approximately $180 was stolen from the restaurant at the Biltmore Golf Course Jan. 23, Coral Gables police reported last week. Burglars entered the restaurant by removing a pane of glass from a patio door. They took the money from a cigar box which had been placed under the cash register.

IT WAS A BIG MOMENT when Loretta Sheehy received the "Good Government" Award at a recent Coral Gables Jaycees affair. Making the presentation to the Coral Gables City Clerk is (right) City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr., who won the award last year. At left is Richard Fuller, Jaycee president.

FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE to his community, George M. Wilson (far left) received this plaque recently from the Coral Gables Jaycees. Presenting the award is last year's winner, attorney Frank W. Guilford Jr. (center). Looking on is Jaycee vice president Larry Adams.

Jaycees Honor Two Gableites

One of the first women to hold a high administrative post at Coral Gables City Hall and a 35-year-old account executive active in community affairs won the "Good Government" and "Distinguished Service" Awards recently at the Coral Gables Jaycee banquet. Loretta Sheehy, the Coral Gables City Clerk, and George M. Wilson, 510 Barbarossa Ave., were honored Jan. 19 at the Coral Gables Country Club. The Jaycees also chose Robert J. Bradley with Florida Power and Light as "Boss of the Year." Certificates of merit were presented to THE TIMES, Coral Gables Youth Center, Waco Motors, Holsum Bakeries and University Federal Savings and Loan Association. Good Government The "Good Government" Award goes to the person who strives to make Coral Gables government as good as possible. The "Distinguished Service" Award is presented to the person who serves Coral Gables by taking part in a broad span of community activities. Miss Sheehy, a long-time Gables resident, has been working for the City of Coral Gables even before it opened its City Hall in 1928. The native of Waterbury, Conn., who was educated in convents and business schools in the north came to Coral Gables in 1923. She first worked as a secretary for Coral Gables, Inc., in the old administration building on Ponce de Leon Blvd. and Miracle Mile. City Secretary Shortly afterward she went to work as a secretary for the city in what is now the American Legion building. It wasn't too long before 1928 rolled around and Coral Gables could boast of its own City Hall. It was then the young Irishwoman went to work as secretary to the City Manager and worked in that capacity until 1954. It was in 1954 that the City Commission, in recognition of Miss Sheehy's work, named her Deputy Clerk. Miss Sheehy was appointed Acting City Clerk several years later and the City Commission made it permanent when it named her City Clerk in January, 1959. As City Clerk, Miss Sheehy is responsible for custody of ordinances and minutes of the Commission meetings, as well as supervising registrations and elections. Wilson, with the firm of Hayden, Stone and Co., is engaged in a large number of varied community activities. He's an honorary member of the Board of Directors of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and on its governmental affairs committee. Wilson is also on the Gables' People to People Committee which is allied with Cartegena, Colombia, in a good will program. He is director in charge of organizing the March of Dimes campaign in Coral Gables and active in soliciting employee funds for United Fund. In 1958, the native of Lincoln-ton, Ga., was elected Commissioner of the Florida Inland Navigation District in which he represented Dade County. Wilson, his wife, Jane, and children, Shelly Jo, 9, and Brian, 7, attend University Baptist Church. A future member of the congregation is 11-month-old, Donna Jane. Miss Sheehy was nominated by attorney Frank W. Guilford Jr. and Wilson was nominated by Walter B. Arnold Jr.
