Bird Walks, Boat Trips To Tell Nature's Secrets

By RAYMOND LANG The action was swift. A grey-tufted male swung a vicious haymaker at his adversary. Another male nattily attired in a blue suit played practical jokes on his neighbors. And a red-haired male dutifully helped his wife feed the children and tuck them into their straw beds. Sound like neighbors of yours? They are! But not the kind you'd chat with over a back fence or borrow sugar from. In a manner of speaking, they're the kind of neighbors you usually "have to look up to." The neighbors are birds! Have Personalities Our feathered friends have personalities, or you might call it "birdalities," just like people. That's the opinion of Kenneth Close, a Coral Gables naturalist. Take the birds for instance. The Mockingbird is tough and ready to fight ferociously for his home. But the Blue Jay is a rascal, a jokester. And the Cardinal is the model husband who helps his wife whenever he can. Close has studied nature most of his life. And he's nailed down tight in his memory observations of what he's seen, such as the habits of birds. "I find the study of nature a fascinating pursuit," said Close, who is looking forward to opening his Feb. 9-April 9 tropical nature introductory course. Peace of Mind "I think there's a peace of mind that comes from the out-of-doors," Close added, "and I've an intellectual curiosity about nature. KENNETH CLOSE "It's an endless pursuit. One never learns all there is to know about nature." What Close has learned along with other noted naturalists will be combined in the tropical nature class, which will meet at the University of Miami. Looking forward to the 12th annual session, Close pointed out that the course is tailor-made for Scout leaders; teachers, other professional people and anyone interested in the out-of-doors. He emphasized it's an introductory course and requires no great knowledge of nature. There'll be 15 evening lectures, on each Thursday night from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and eight field trips, one each Sunday afternoon. One of the field trips will be a guided tour, by boat and foot, through the nature-rich Everglades. For further information on the nature course, sponsored by the University and Tropical Audubon Society, call Kenneth Close, 638 Velarde Ave., at HI 6-2894.

300 Members Club Will Present Gable's Biggest Flower Show

This is the first of a series of four profiles of members of the Coral Gables Garden Club who are in charge of the elaborate flower show the club will present this year in the Coral Gables Masonic Temple, 41 Valencia, the last week in February. Today's subject is Mrs. George R. Simmons, 751 Davis Rd., who had a full color picture in the 1961 Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Calendar. A color picture in this annual volume is by invitation only. Designs Containers Mrs. Simmons is not only a flower arranger, but she designed many of her own containers and vases and had them made by a Carolina craftsman. The containers are made of wood, cooper lined. She lectured and was known for her talent in gardening in North Carolina before she moved to Coral Gables. Mrs. Simons originated and developed a visual school of flower arrangement in Winston-Salem. She called it "The Little Art Gallery." It was designed so that the flower arrangements could be displayed in the proper setting. The Little Gallery had niches, movable partitions and movable shelves so that any arrangement could be framed to scale for display. One of her main rules is balance. She says plant material should reach above the container and it must be in good balance. "One can have good balance without good design," she says, "but one cannot achieve good design without proper balance." Expresses Art Always a great admirer of the late Dr. Liberty Hyde Bailey, Mrs. Simmons feels as he did that plant forms can express art and that a beautiful arrangement can captivate and inspire in the same way that a beautiful painting does. Mrs. Simmons won many awards and top honors in North Carolina and Virginia before moving to Florida. She continues to hold her place on that level here. Besides her full color arrangement in the 1961 Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Calendar she also had one published in the 1960 calendar, and one of her arrangements was used on the April 1960 cover of Tropical Living Magazine.
