Gables High Notes
Seniors Sweep Field Of Science Honors
By LESLIE GROSS In late January, eight Coral Gables High School seniors were included in the Honors Group of the 20th annual Westinghouse Science Talent Search. Those listed in the Honors Group were in the top 10 per cent of those who completed entries in the Science Talent Search. This Honors list is distributed to all universities and colleges of the United States by the American Council on Education. From 399 selected for this group from students across the nation, 40 are chosen as winners of a trip to Washington. Among these, $34,250 in scholarships and awards will be distributed. Coral Gables leads the State of Florida with eight winners. Only five others made the honors group in the rest of the state. Gables, the only school in Dade County to have any winners, ranked fourth in the nation. We were exceeded only by Evanston Township High School (N.Y.) - 13; Erasmus of Brooklyn-12; Bronx High School of Science -10. Last year Gables had three Honors Group members and one Washington trip winner, Robert Friis. Guides Students Much of the credit for Gables' amazing success should be given to Mr. Walter Bowlby, one of our chemistry instructors. Mr. Bowlby sought out the better science students in their sophomore year, and interested them in the Westinghouse contest. He gave these 25 students old tests, tried to interest them in projects, and held periodic meetings during the entire three year period. This fall, prior to the written examination, a 21⁄2 hour session, our scholars attended weekly briefing sessions on different fields of science. Mr. Bowlby gave advice for the actual writing of the scientific papers describing their research projects, and toiled for hours filling in the students' personal data sheets with them. In a preview to Mr. Rath, another driving force in Westinghouse, Mr. Bowlby optimistically predicted six winners. To his surprise and delight eight of his charges were announced as winners. Of the 15 from Gables who completed entries, the following eight winners are listed with their projects. Their Projects Donna Elizabeth Finerty - Embryonic Chick Heart as a Biological Thermometer. Norman Gravitz - Properties of the Hyaline Plasma Membrane of the Lytechinus variegatus. Leslie Jay Gross - A comparative Survey of the Salinity Tolerence of Seven Species of Shallow-water Hermit Crabs of the Families Paguridae and Diogenidae. Katherine Marland Kamp - Fungal Infestation of Submerged Cordage and Concurrent Enzymatic Activity. Warren Robert Kirsch- Synthesis of Schiff Bases at Potential Anti-Cancer Agents. Donald Sinclair McCorquodale- Incidence of Staphlococcus in High School Students. Eloise Ann Melson - The Finite Solid Geometry System. Jeffrey Mark Platt- An Investigation of the Phenomenon of Tidal-Induced Fluctuations in a Restricted Estuarine Channel. Special thanks should also be given to the University of Miami. Seven of the eight students were associated with UM personnel, three of them at the Marine Lab.

They were advised by the women physical education teachers. All members received a copy of the constitution. The varsity squad has selected Kathy O'Donnell, senior, as sergeant-at-arms. Rifle Club Six members of the Palmetto Rifle Club, who fired in the Dade County Junior Rifle Roundup recently, won awards. The winners were Peter Eloff, Clinton Terry, George Bost, Pat Corcoran, John Kircheiner and Margaret Fairchilds. Margaret Fairchilds was the high girl scorer in her class.
