News Of The PTA / Schools Plan Programs To Salute Founder's Day / Gables PTA To Dance, Dine

By EUNICE TALL MO 1-2294 February is the month Parent Teach Associations were founded. Each school celebrates Founder's Day. The Coral Gables High School PTA will have its annual fund raising dinner Thursday, Feb. 9, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The event will be a roast beef dinner. Take-out service will be available. The cost is $1.50. In addition, there will be a home bake sale. Dinner will be followed by a dance with music by the Prowler Band. Dinner guests will be admitted free. Mrs. M. L. Grossman is chairman of the ways and means committee. Members of the committee are Mrs. M. C. Kern, Mrs. Harry Link, Mrs. R. Seymour and Mrs. Lou Woodward. The public is invited. At Emerson Elementary School the celebration for the founding of the PTA will be Tuesday, 3:15 p.m., in the school cafetorium. At this time the PTA will recognize the work, accomplishments and progress of the school's PTA since its formation in 1954. Past presidents will give talks on highlights of the PTA during their year, or years, in office. Past presidents of Emerson Elementary PTA are Mrs. Percy Nunnery, 1954 to 1956; Mrs. Irvin Floyd, 1957 to 1959, and Mrs. Roy Proctor Jr., 1959 to 1960. Mrs. Alfred Rappuhn is president of the Emerson PTA this year. Babysitting will be provided for those who need it in Room 4. Refreshments will be served. * * * Rehearsals are in full swing for the Emerson Elementary PTA musical program entitled "Heavenly Days". This program is to be shown in March. Songs and skits will represent each month of the year. Rehearsals are every Monday night at 8 in the cafetorium. Parents are invited to attend and participate. Coral Gables Elementary "Up to the minute with arithmetic" is the theme for the February PTA meeting of Coral Gables Elementary School on Feb. 14 at 3:15 p.m. in the school cafetorium. Guest speaker will be Mrs. Mary Young Nesbit, director of mathematics for Dade County. * * * To celebrate PTA Founder's Day at Coral Gables Elementary, PTA historian Mrs. William Weil, 425 Miller Road, will give a history report of the school's PTA. Refreshments will be served.

GOP Women To See 'Operation Abolition'

The Riviera Republican Women's Club of Coral Gables will present the sound film "Operation Abolition" at a coffee at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Country Club of Coral Gables. The film is a release of the House Un-American Activities Committee. The commentator will be Ted Slack Jr., who presented this film recently before the Dade County School Board meeting.

Ron Levitt Opens Own Public Relations Firm

Ronald Levitt, former Florida United Press International correspondent and advertising-public relations executive, has announced the formation of his own public relations firm with offices at 623 Brickell Ave. The firm will have a department specializing in shopping center and real estate development in addition to its general public relations counselling services in the business field. Levi writes a column for The Guide, a free destribution newspaper published in the Southwest Area by The Times.

Thieves Get Jack

Two expensive automobile jacks, valued at $250, were stolen from the General Tire Co. gas station, 301 Giralda between Jan. 21-23, according to Coral Gables police.

Dateline: Southwest High / Governor Answers Query About Driver Education

By LAURA HENRY Mike Schneider, a junior at Southwest High School, wrote to Gov. Farris Bryant regarding the emphasis placed on the Driver Education Program presently underway at Southwest. On Jan. 19, Mike received a letter from the governor. He stated that the results of these studies will result in the new legislation and more emphasis on safety education and enforcement. Drilling Cagerettes The Southwest cagerettes are now practicing for the tournament at Miami High. Under the watchful eye of Miss Judy Shaliboz, the girls are running through drills and practice games. Returning players Anita Sneed, Dolores Laws, Richeen Laws and Sue Wright are expected to join with many promising sophomores in forming an experienced and well rounded team. Southwest finished third in last year's tournament. Orchestra Concert Last Wednesday night, the concert orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Phillip Fink, presented a full hour and a half of fine music. A solo by Ronnie Meyers began the concert, followed by a varity of selections. The second part of the program began under the leadership of student director Stan Sigismond. The concert orchestra combined its strings to "produce "South American Overture and many others. Last year Southwest's Concert Orchestra won superior rating at the district concert contest and went on to St. Petersburg to win a superior rating in the state contest.

Goes With Insurance Board

Phillip Becker, former executive vice president of the Stephen J. Flynn Co., Inc., Gables public relations firm, has been appointed executive secretary of the Greater Miami Insurance Board. Becker, once a TIMES staffer, will handle public relations and administrative duties for the local association of independent insurance agents.
