Crane's fate in city's hands
The skeletal construction crane at the top of a half-built condominium at 911 E. Ponce de Leon will either be taken down May 26 or put to work by June 1. The Coral Gables City Commission, at its meeting Tuesday, May 25, will learn - at a 10 a.m. hearing - which alternative will actually happen. The rest of the commission's agenda is 99 per cent routine and one per cent whimsey. The whimsey comes from a suggestion by the city's Bicentennial Committee. The committee suggests a Bicentennial ball on a Saturday night before the Fourth of July with guests wearing historical costumes. They also suggest having invitations to the event delivered to City Hall and nearby points by a man dressed as Uncle Sam and riding a horse. Other items on the commission's agenda include: • A presentation, at 9:15 a.m., from West Miami Councilman Martin Yelen, who will speak on behalf of the Dade County Citizen's Safety Council. • An ordinance naming the current Planning Board as a Local Planning Agency, as required by the federal Local Government Comprehensive Planning Act of 1975. • A lease agreement with the School Board for city use of Merrick School's Coliseum Park in exchange for payment of one-half the maintenance costs. • A resolution to allow Publix Market to build a public parking lot on Monza Avenue. • A resolution to recondition eight clay tennis courts at Salvadore Park. • A resolution changing the current Civil Preparedness Division to the Disaster Preparedness Division. • Appointments of members to the Board of Architects and the Solicitations Advisory Board. • An appearance by Edmund P. Russo and Charles Seaman on the construction and leasing of offstreet parking in the right-of-way on the south side of Ponce de Leon in the 4600 block. • Present keys to the city to Carolin Screven and Helen Lewis for their outstanding attendance record at city commission meetings. • Present a certificate of appreciation to Minnie Slater for her gift to the city, a 1924 Coral Gables street map.
