University Baptist celebrates 50th anniversary

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer University Baptist Church — a Coral Gables church which has served the community since 1926 — will celebrate its 50th Anniversary Sunday, May 30. Reverend Dan Yeary, pastor since July 1975, said that the congregation will celebrate the anniversary for an entire week, from Sunday, May 23, through Sunday, May 30. "Basically, we're paying tribute to the past, and recognizing those who paid the price to get us where we are today," said Rev. Yeary. "And, we're projecting ourselves toward the future." The pastor said University Baptist was chartered in 1926 with 78 members. The first building was built on Coconut Grove Drive, but it was destroyed by a hurricane shortly thereafter. For several months, he added, the church held services at the Country Club of Coral Gables and in the dining room of the Biltmore. In November, '26, the church again moved to a new building on San Sebastian Avenue. Then in 1948, said Rev. Yeary, the church sold that property and moved to its present location at 624 Anastasia Ave. The then new building, which cost $173,000, was dedicated on March 1, 1949. Reverend Yeary said that the most amazing change he has seen at University Baptist is the growth in the congregation and the specific groups that are being attracted. "At the end of the first year, we had 333 members," said Yeary. "Now, we have 1,352. "The current growth is made up of young marrieds, nursery children, single adults and college students. We have a major mission to the UM campus and the family. "We want to be the University Baptist Church of Coral Gables and Miami. We're not a neighborhood church . . . we're a metropolitan church. We want to be an honest church with an agressive ministry." He added that nine months ago, the church had only 12 college students. Now it boasts 120. "I've been pressing for a strong ministry to high school and college students, single adults and to the total family unit. I also want to have a firm ministry to mar-riage," he said. The Anniversary Week will begin Sunday, May 23, with George King and the Fellowship, a youth singing group, performing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, the Anniversary Tribute will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 26, Service Fellowship, the senior citizens service organization, will hold its Anniversary Celebration. Saturday, May 29, the high school choir will present a Dinner Theater entitled, "Freedom Is . . . A New Exodus," at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 30 — the actual anniversary date — worship services will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., and Rev. Yeary will preach on "Where Will We Go From Here?" All charter members of the church will be recognized at the 11 a.m. service. Dinner will be served on the grounds at noon, and Ralph Langley, pastor of University Baptist 20 years ago, will preach at 7:30 p.m. Following the last service, the Anniversary Reception, honoring Dr. Langley and the charter members, will be given at 8 p.m. All South Dade residents are invited to attend.
