S. Dade coaches won't let lightning strike twice
Lightning struck six months ago and young Julio Portela died. Portela, a Columbus High School tenth grader, was practicing with the school's junior varsity football squad when he was hit by lightning. The memory of his death has made local coaches particularly wary about lightning. Now teams are cleared off the field at any hint of stormy weather and, with the rainy season beginning again, coaches are warning others to get indoors when thunder and lightning arrive. "When we see the first sign of lightning, we yank our kids off the field," explained K-Land center director Doug Cooper. "You just can't toy with a kid's life for the sake of a game. "I think the Portela youngster's death brought the factor out into the open and a lot of coaches would be foolish to ignore signs of impending lightning," Cooper added. "It's just not worth it." Lightning doesn't always give advance warning before it hits. Witnesses to Julio Portala's death say there was no sign of lightning before it struck the player. "If I had any apprehensions about lightning, I would pull my kids off the field," said Howard-Palmetto coach Jack Owens. "It would depend on how far the lightning was and if there was a lot of it, but my first concern is for the kids." JOHN WALTERS Julio Portela ... no warning
