Gone are the lines of waiting automobiles
By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer There are no lines at the West Miami vehicle inspection now, only the hot sun beating down on the white-painted wooden structure which housed the busiest auto inspection station in all of Dade last year. Motorists still ride by the inspection station, hoping they won't have to wait in a long line to have their annual car inspection. But there is a sign explaining that the inspection station is closed. And residents of two nearby apartments houses are happy about this. "The inspection station actually lowered the value of the apartment houses," said West Miami Mayor Edmund Cooper, whose running battle with Metro over the city's financial losses at the station forced its closing earlier this month. The West Miami council now is pondering what is to become of the inspection station. "Ironically," explained Mayor Cooper, "it still may be used as an inspection station, but not by any government. "Some big automobile agencies have their own inspection stations, and several of these dealers have expressed an interest in leasing the West Miami station." This is merely one alternative to the city letting the building remain padlocked and allowed to deteriorate. "We could also sell the property, or lease the property for another commercial useage," the mayor added. But Mayor Cooper feels there is little chance the building will ever again be operated by a government for the inspection of vehicles. "It's over for West Miami, and there is little chance that Metro will ever lease the station," the mayor said. And the nearby apartment dwellers are just as glad.
