His rose photo captures contest

Art Hart, a South Miami nursery owner, has won first place in the Photographic Country Club's recent showing, according to PCC director Howard Sweet. Hart's work, entitled "Roses in the Rain" drew the most votes from among those who viewed the 75 photos on display at PCC studios, 8455 Bird Rd. Thirty photographers, including second-place winner Mark Levin and third-place recipient Steve Evans, were represented in the competition.

SD women show well in Lowe's new exhibit

One-fourth of the 83 women displaying their artwork at the Lowe Museum's "Professional Women Artists of Florida" exhibit are from Coral Gables or South Dade. The show, which starts Thursday, July 22, will feature painting, sculpture, photographs, fiber work, clay, wood and prints. One of the artists contributing to the display is Alice Terry of 7530 SW 35th St., who will show two sets of ceramic sculpture. One of the founders of W.A.I.T. (Women Artists, It's Time), Ms. Terry says the scope for women artists in Dade has "come a long way. I'm glad to see a show that branches out. I'm also curious to see what will be displayed. "I hope it will be a strong, exciting show," Ms. Terry said. "It shouldn't be seen just as a snow by women. "It's great to show as women," she further explained, "but I think of myself as an artist." The show came about because of a program for women. It will tie in with the Hemispheric Conference for Women on Miami Beach, Aug. 5 to 8. Local women who will participate in the exhibit include: Gigi Aramesco of 28th Street, Jill Cannady of SW 74th Avenue, Val Carroll of 644 Navaree Ave., Eleanor Chambers SW 51st Terrace, B. Clark of 14115 S. Dixie Hwy., Maggie Davis of South Dade, Christine Federight of Majorca Avenue, Lynne Gowb Gelfman of SW 54th Court, Sandra Goldman of SW 104th Court, Roberta Griffin of SW 166th Terrace and Anne Kinggard of SW 76th Terrace. Others displaying their work will be Debbie Meunch of SW 83rd Street, Shirley Musgrave of Florida International University, Abby Pearlmutter of SW 108th Avenue, Margaret Pelton of SW 82nd Road, Ruth Ramosen of SW 84th Street, Ann Sains of Leahy Way, Alice Terry of SW 35th Street, Shirley Thiele of the University of Miami and Jean Ward of SW 94th Street. Hours at the Lowe are: noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Saturday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. Admission is free. - ERICA MEYER
