This dessert sure to win votes
We may not crown our presidents, but we're just as curious about our leaders as the Europeans are about their monarchs. Once a politeial figure catches the public eye, Americans want to know everything about the candidate or official, and that's why, from Martha Washington's cake on, what is cooked, served and eaten in the White House has been news. Almost every first lady has felt obliged to share her favorite recipes with the American public. When Bess Truman filled that role, she gave out her recipe for Ozark Pudding. Mamie Eisenhower contributed her molded salad recipe to a Washington cookbook, and Mrs. Johnson introduced Americans to her Texas Style Chili and Pecan Pie. In this election year, candidates are cooking up enthusiasm and votes. One of Betty Ford's favorite recipes is this one for Strawberry Blitz Torte. Strawberry Blitz 1 cup sifted cake flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup sugar 4 egg yolks 3 Tbsp. milk 1 tsp. vanilla Meringue 4 egg whites 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar 1 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla Sift flour, baking powder and salt three times. Cream shortening add sugar slowly and cream mixture until light and fluffy. Beat egg yolks until they are thick and add to creamed mixture. Stir in milk and vanilla. Add dry ingredients and beat until batter is smooth. Spread into two greased 8" layer cake pans. For meringue, beat egg whites, salt, and cream of tartar until they stand in soft peaks when the beater is lifted. Add sugar 2 tbsp. at a time, beating very thoroughly after each addition. Add vanilla. Lightly pile one-half of the meringue mixture over the batter in each pan. Bake in a preheated oven 350 degrees about 35 minutes. Remove from oven, loosen sides of tortes from pans and remove them to wire racks, keeping the meringue side up. When cool, spread strawberry filling between the layers. Strawberry Filling: Combine 1/2 cup whipping cream and 2 Tbsp. confectioner's sugar; whip until stiff. Fold in 1 cup sliced strawberries; spread between layers of Blitz Torte.

on the town ... pat gabriel The 'Insiders' were `all wet' for bicentennial The Country Club of Coral Gables has many "in" groups that have happenings all year round, the latest numbering 100 in membership is the Insiders. Their bi-centennial offering was a pool party, that simple, but with dancing under the stars 'neath a Miami moon that put the icing to the cake. It was live music to the Southern Trust band and they frolicked until midnight. Five chairmen worked on this affair to make it a success; great team Cynthia and Kathi Skijus, Westward Ho Restaurant is their family it's no wonder they are so good at organization; Jeanette Slesnick and John and Baha Almond the other chairmen. Club president Owen Fabio and club first lady Grace were there, Owen keeps his finger on the pulse of happenings. Teth Holer president Patrick Crook and Lorna and Don and Ann Slesnick reserved too, they love to dance and you will always find them where the action is. Cush and Daru Lane were there, just back from Oklahoma with baby and all, David andJudy Morton, Manuel and Eileen Alonso and Frank and Pat DeRoberts were there, so were Joe and Ann Kelly, Brian and Doris Logan and John and Sheryl Ackerman proving that dancing under the stars is more fun. The pool party was only the beginning, guests were already teaming up for the July 14 "8 Ball Pool Tournament," the table kind of pool. There was friendly rivalry and much kibitzing. Thanks to Barbara Woodworth, Sheryl Ackerman, Marge Harring and Sally Steele who got the "8 ball" going via Ma Bell and John and Babs Almond who were chairmen and Jeanette Slesnick who masterminded the silent movie entertainment to round out the evening. Participants included Edna and John Martens, Ralph and Dottie Haefele, Ed and desiree a [?po-?], Don and Ann Slesnick, Carlos and Polly Rodriguez, John and Sheryl Ackerman, Joe and Anny Kelly and David and Judy Morton doing the doubles routine. Ben Mesiano, Patricia Starke, Barbara Woodworth and Al Dohre doing the singles bit. Six teams competed through the night, the tension was high, only the 8 ball remained to be sunk to win the tournament. Ralph Haefele counseled Dottie on her last play of the night while Ed Greene and Sue stood quietly. It was murmured that Dottie, who had never played pool in her life, couldn't drop the shot but she did it. Looks like golf will give way to pool. Dottie received a beautiful suede bag and Ralph is sporting a pair of tiger eye cuff links while second place winners Sue and Ed went away cuddling stuffed animals. Pam Richards who teamed with Al Dohre came in third, the Martens were fourth, Jeanette Slesnick and Ben Mesiano were fifth, with the Slesnick's, Don and Ann sixth. They all get to wear bicentennial patches as finals teams. Through it all, Polly Rodriguez entertained on her guitar with lovely Spanish melodies.
Washington installation
Kay (Mrs. John) Milton is going to be a very busy lady this year serving as Regent of the Florida State Society, Daughters of the American Revolution. She was lightly installed in Washington in April in this our bicentennial year. Kay is a past Regent of the Miami Chapter D.A.R. She is busily making plans for the State Convention to be held here in the fall at the Four Ambassadors.
Have it your way
If you drop into Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club any Tuesday through Saturday night and find Formagioi Carroza, Copper nugget, Steamed Shrimp Monte Cristo, you will be in the Copper Mine, a new concept in design with gourmet dining. But come Sunday, the room is bathed in candlelight and gourmet buffet is served. Kings Bayers have their cake and eat it too.
Laughing all the way
The Theater of the Performing Arts set the music world afire with their Musical Jubilee, a collection of songs from our past and a funny satire on the opera that found the opening night audience falling out of their seats in laughter. Playing now is a musical treatment of "Gone With the Wind" and with Zev Bufman, Charlie Cinnamon and group in charge, the burning of Atlanta should be a sensation not to be missed.
FOOD / But dieters may cast ballot for these
FOOD But dieters may cast ballot for these More and more people seem to be on diets which emphasize foods low in cholesterol and high in polyunsaturates. Not only do these tempting appetizer snacks fit in beautifully with diets prescribed for cholesterol-watchers, they help beat the inflation crunch, they're so economical. As you can see at a glance, the ingredients for the snacks are non-costly staples. And a small amount of each goes a long way. Promisetwists 3/4 cup whole wheat flour 3/4 cup unsifted all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup sunflower oil margarine 1/4 cup plain yogurt, made from part skimmed milk 1 tablespoon grated onion 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds Mix flours and salt in bowl. Add margarine and yogurt, and work into a dough with wooden spoon or pastry blender. Stir in onion and caraway seeds; knead in bowl about five minutes. Roll dough paper-thin on lightly floured surface. Cut with pastry wheel or potato krinkle cutter into four 1/2-inch strips. Twist ends in opposite directions to curl; place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in 350 degree oven 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Yield: 30 twists, 28 calories each. Cheese straws 2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) grated part-skimmed milk Swiss cheese 3/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup sunflower oil margarine 1/8 teaspoon Tabasco pepper sauce 1/4 cup skimmed milk (about) 1 egg white slightly beaten Sesame seeds In large bowl mix flour, cheese and salt.
