Giving People-to-People some punch
Richie Lee Roberts is going to Cartegena to win. Part of a team of eight local boxers fighting a charity exhibition match in Coral Gables' Colombian Sister City on Sunday, Aug. 22, Roberts has never won a match on the road. Although he's ranked sixth among welterweights in the country and traveled to Russia with the U.S. Boxing Team, Roberts says fighting on the road "is harder than fighting at home. I haven't won any bouts traveling. I've got to win one on the road. I'm looking forward to winning this trip." Roberts, 19, of Frow Avenue, is a Coral Gables High School graduate who attends Miami Dade Community College. He's been boxing for seven and a half years. "I feel I'm the best boxer in my weight," he stated, "but I just have to prove it — and I plan to go to South America and do just that." The boxing match, sponsored by the Coral Gables People to People Program, will raise money for People to People projects in Cartegena. The eight Dade boxers will fight South American contenders in Cartegena's bull fight ring. For 16 years, money for the program has been raised with an exhibition baseball game, but the power transformer in the Cartegena stadium blew out and boxing was substituted for the baseball game. Joe Mantinan, Coral Gables Assistant to the City Manager, who arranged the trip for the boxers, hopes "the boxing event may make even more money than the baseball games." The boxers are participants in the Golden Gloves program at Elizabeth Virrick gym on Bayshore Drive. The program is directed by Dick Lee. Former Coral Gables firefighter and UM boxing Coach Bill Regan is coaching. Two South Dade boxers, Gil Palmer and Sammy Porriera, will be on the team with Roberts, Johnny Brown, Anthony Collins, Johnny Compo, Joe Grey and Ken Ryals. Roberts trains faithfully, three hours a day, to get ready for this kind of excursion. "I'm an all-around boxer," he said. "I don't have a knock out punch, but I'm quick and I jab a lot. — ERICA MEYER
