He made home a showcase for things family enjoys

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer Morton Steubins had no prior experience in beautifying a home, but he was willing to try anything at least once. As a result, his Palmetto home has become a showcase for the things that Steubins and his wife, Louise, truly enjoy. From the hand-made stained glass in the living room to the large formica desk and light fixture in one of their children's room, the Steubins' talents can be traced throughout the pleasant home. After his wife bought him a book on how to make stained glass, he began crafting the yellow, green and blue pieces that would eventually be the Tiffany-style glass panels on both sides of the mantlepiece. "Every night he would come home from work so that he could have it finished before the children came home from summer camp," said Mrs. Steubins. "He started working on it in April and finished just two weeks ago." The mantlepiece that separates the stained glass panels was also a Morton Steubins production. When the couple picked up the old French mantle in an antique shop, it was in four parts. "We put it together and my husband built the hearth from white tile," said Mrs. Steubins.
