Cop finds 'she' to be he
Coral Gables police Officer Charles Van Horn got a less-than-tempting proposition in the wee morning hours Monday, Aug. 23. As he was cruising down LeJeune Road in an unmarked police car around 4:30 a.m., he noticed a tall, dark woman, dressed fit to kill, standing on the sidewalk at LeJeune and South Dixie Highway. As the officer approached the intersection, the woman flagged him down and asked for a ride. When Van Horn got out and frisked the night walker, however, he found that "she" was actually a he. Attired in a black and white blouse, blue skirt, ladies' sandals, rings and bracelets, long black hair wig and false breasts, the character, who identified himself as Johnnie Handerson, stood six feet one. When the policeman searched Handerson, he found an arrest form in his brown handbag, and parole paper listing the name Johnnie Handkerson. Van Horn arrested the 20-year-old man - whose real name later proved to be Walter Benjamin Harris - on charges of loitering and prowling, having no valid identification and giving false information to a police officer. A subsequent computer check revealed that Harris is wanted under his alias for violation of parole. He is now in the Dade County jail. - ELIZABETH OWEN
Two Gableites attempt suicide
There were two apparent suicide attempts in Coral Gables last week, according to police. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 9:03 a.m., officers responded to a call at 5210 Alhambra Cir., where they found Audrey S. Askowitz, 45, unconscious in her bed. She had apparently taken an overdose of Seconal pills, and according to officers, had left a suicide note on the kitchen table. She was taken to Doctors Hospital, where she was in stable condition at last report. Thursday, Aug. 19, at 4:20 a.m., police were called to the home of Harold Houtz, 80, at 20 Calabria. Houtz told officers he had tried to take his life cutting his wrist. Although there was blood all over the house, police said Houtz was barely bleeding when they arrived. The elderly man was treated at his home, then taken to Veterans Hospital.
