entertainment Spotlight focuses on charming narrator
By CLAIRE ORTALDA Entertainment Writer The white light centers on the figure lounging against the podium, then brightens to show the elegant tuxedo, the manicured hand holding the long cigarette holder, the sardonic smile. The man in the spotlight is a professional tempter. He started back with Adam and Eve, worked a Roman arena once and took a turn as a devilish fairy godmother in modern times. He is the narrator and controlling force in the tongue-in-cheek comedy, "The Apple Tree" presented by the Spotlight Players this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26 through 28. In this musical romp through history, men and women of three different eras discover that jealousy and temptation creep into every love relationship. The first comic vignette, "The Diary," is based on Mark Twain's Eve story. The narrator played by Raphael Pireto, is the serpent, of course, whose successful temptation of Eve forces the first couple out of the Garden. A Roman arena is the scene for the second act, where the King's daughter is caught between love and jealousy. She is forced to decide her lover's fate when the professional tempter, the narrator, tells her which door houses the beauty and which the beast in this adaption of the story, "The Lady or the Tiger?" The third act is a modern Cinderella story, with the narrator playing the fairy godmother this time. Ella, played by Pam Pyms whose performance as a pitiful chimney sweep almost outshines that of the narrator, longs to become a "bootiful moovie star." Ironic and moralistic at the same time, "The Apple Tree" shows that the cycle of love and temptation will continue through time and the lounging narrator will always be in demand, at least by the weaker sex. A good combo, highly stylized choreography and boisterous singing move the action along. Curtain time for this local version of the Broadway hit is 8 p.m. at the Little Theater at the Youth Fair Building (112th Avenue and Coral Way.) Tickets are $3.50 for adults and $2.00 for students. Raphael Pireto plays a snake, balladeer ... and suave 'fairy godmother' in 'The Apple Tree'
