Postal worker says lot exit from CGPD station unsafe

Photos by ELIZABETH OWEN | Exciting autos might not see pedestrians | Postal worker says lot exit from CGPD station unsafe By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Bernie Levanthal does not want to cause an accident. A 16-year veteran of the Postal Service, who works at the Coral Gables Post Office, he, like his fellow workers, parks his personal car in the garage of the new police and fire station at Salzedo and Palermo. When he leaves for home in the late afternoon, however, he says he must pass a dangerous blind spot at the exit onto Palermo. The shoulder-high wall, lined with thickly grown plants blocks any view of oncoming cars, and more dangerous yet, of passing pedestrians. "You can't see a person, and if it's a child, good-bye," said Levanthal. "Other Post Office employes, and especially police officers rushing to emergencies, shoot out of that garage onto the street. "It's a blind spot and a hazard. Why should an accident happen to begin with? Safety is something we should recognize before the fact." Levanthal said he complained to the police desk sergeant three months ago, and was told that City Hall handles such matters. When he went to City Hall, he claimed he was given the runaround. "We're taught defensive driving by the Post Office," said Levanthal. "I suggest that a large concave mirror be put up, showing the blocked part of the street and side-walk. We have such mirrors on our delivery trucks, to avoid running over small children who walk into that blind spot." The mail carrier also suggested that a sign reading "Blow Your Horn" be tacked up in full view of those exiting the garage. When The Times/Guide contacted Frank Schafer, employe relations director of the city Insurance and Safety Department, he said he had received no prior complaints about the spot. "This is the first I've heard about it," said Schafer. "Levanthal never got in touch with me. "But we'll look into it right away, and whatever it requires, we'll naturally do it."
