Disowned Danes are her concern
By ELIZABETH OWIN Staff Writer It's enough to make any animal lover sick. Just last week, June Clark took in an abandoned harlequin-colored Great Dane whose ears were rotting with gangrene. The former owners, she said, had not taken proper care of their pet. The sickly dog had to have its ears cropped to its head to spare its life. Before that, June rescued another abandoned Dane, a full-grown black dog that weighed a pitiful 80 pounds. One of its legs, which had been broken months before, still had a steel pin inside that should have been removed long ago. Another Dane owner gave up her pet, claiming he was a "fence jumper" and uncontrollable. June, who is head of Great Dane Rescue in South Dade, has seen worse. "Between Dade and Broward counties, we average a Dane a day — either an abandoned dog or a give-up," she said. "When people give up a dog, they don't always tell the truth. Great Dane Rescue, an offshoot of the Great Dane Club of South Florida, of which June is publicity chairman, has been operating for about a year. Its purpose is to rescue Danes that have been abandoned or given up, spay or neuter them if necessary, and place them in foster homes until permanent homes can be found. However, the organization has no foster homes in South Dade at the present. June, who already has three Danes of her own — Diablo, Cyd and Angela —cannot house another. "The organization will pay for the Dane's food and medical treatment. We just need animal-lovers in the southwest are who are willing to keep a Dane for a short while," June said. "It started because there were so many Danes that were being abandoned, for one reason or another," said June. "This, of course, means there is an over-production of Danes. Anyone in South Dade who is willing to be a permanent or foster parent to a Great Dane, or who can contribute dog food or money, should call June at 666-3518.
