Lancers get new director

Ms. Chatham Southwest's Royal Lancer Band will have a new director when school starts this fall. E. Irene Chatham has been hired as director of all bands at Southwest High School. Miss Chatham, who comes to Southwest with a long list of credits acquired during her nine years of professional experience, is replacing Melvin E. Baker, who has taken a similar position at the new Southridge High School. This past year, Miss Chatham was a graduate assistant at the University of South Florida's Music Education and Bands School. Prior to that, she was director of the music program at Englewood High School in Jacksonville from 1972 to 1975. She was honored as the Jacksonville Jaycees' Outstanding Young Educator for Duval County, named one of Duval County School Board's "Top Five Teachers," and was named Englewood High School Teacher of the Year. In addition, Miss Chatham has served as clinician to various junior and senior high school bands and orchestras, and served as adjudicator for various contests and youth symphony auditions. Aside from her teaching experience, she has studied the piano, trumpet, French horn, orchestral conducting, percussion, violin and jazz band. Miss Chatham earned her bachelor of music degree from Florida State University and a Master of Arts at the University of South Florida. ANA MARIA ALVAREZ
